Revenge of the Tweenage Girls: Kris Wins Idol
Clearly Nebulous Love Hate Oprah.com ^ | May 20, 2009 | Colette Moran

Posted on 05/20/2009 8:54:44 PM PDT by CMoran325

Newsweek speculated that there was a Christian voting bloc that would affect the outcome of the American Idol finale -- and others pondered that there  might be an anti-gay backlash against Adam. (Although no one but he knows for sure what his true inclinations are...)

I'm not going to suggest that there wasn't a whole bunch of conservative folks voting for Kris -- I'm certain there were, considering that Idol is one of the few shows that (for the most part) is family friendly and appeals to all ages. But honestly that would be a "Pro-Kris" vote, not an "Anti-Adam" vote.

Adam obviously was the more talented singer, with much greater range, and was more of a flamboyant showman. We know there is a contingent out there that likes that sort of performance -- David Cook was the more edgy performer and he prevailed. (Although that, arguably, may have been Revenge of the Rockers, inspired by the early exit of Chris Daughtry the previous season.)

But Kris was more universally appealing, and he also performed on both guitar and piano. When he was done with a song, everyone in the room could at least say -- well, that was nice, and often even more. With Adam, as much as I admired his vocal talents, I often fast-forwarded through the last minute of his performances. It was all too much, and I'm sure there were many others who felt that same way. And many were probably baffled by some of his performances. ("Ring of Fire" anyone?!)

But I truly believe that the tipping point for this contest had to be the female tweenage fans of the show. They were heart-broken last season when David Archuleta lost to the more talented edgy guy, and they were NOT going to let it happen this time! What else did they have to do last night? I would venture that many dialed, got through, hit flash, hit redial, got through, flash, redial, got through, flash, redial... For four... straight... hours.

In one way that bothered me this season -- that more talented singers were losing out to a teen heart-throb. But if that's what it took for the underdog -- the wholesome, came-out-of-nowhere boy next door -- to defeat the affectatious darling of the entertainment crowd and the media... Well, so be it. And maybe today's youth isn't as dumb as I thought.

Adam will still be huge. He didn't need to win. Plus, he can console himself: He never has to sing that "No Boundaries" song ever again!

Congratulations, Kris! May your career shine as brightly as your smile, and your life be filled with even more of the joy that is apparent with your wife and family.

...that Idol is one of the few shows that (for the most part) is family friendly...

Not tonight it wasn't. Pretty sleazy and family hostile I'd say, including a censored cutaway, on-stage stripping, etc. Borderline for children.

I have nothing against Adam.. he seems plenty nice and very talented.

But the way the judges GUSHED over him....like he was the MESSIAH or something...sorta reminded me of the last time the “judges” (media) shoved someone down our throats.

Like why should we even trouble our pretty heads when the smart ones have it all figured out for us?

I am THRILLED that we troubled our pretty heads and said FU to the judges.

You're comparing Adam to Obama?

I can happily and honestly say that I’ve never in my life watched a minute of this show.

Then why bother to even comment?

It actually has some excellent talent on it.

The result was a travesty, even the winner was shocked. Allen should finished about fifth or sixth in the competition but obviously managed to get a good voting block going for himself. It's kind an allegory of how 0bama won the presidency, a guy with little talent but good organization.

Simon Cowell was totally pissed, the result has likely robbed him of millions. I suspect he won't be back next year, this will be the last straw.

Why do you say that like it’s a good thing..You’ve missed some wonderful musical moments. Your loss. Am I supposed to applaud you for being a cultural fool? I don’t get it.

You’re out of your mind. Adam will be the biggest star ever to come out of Idol. Kris Allen is a good singer, but there are thousands of people that sound just like him. Who cares...Adam emerged the star. There have been a bunch of Idol winners who never went on to greatness...I predict Kris will be one of them.

Were you there? The crowds were huge in San Diego. Why must you guys knock him. He has never used his sexuality and he has been nothing but polite and gracious. Even in his defeat tonight, he was incredibly gracious and upbeat and kept putting the focus back on the winner. BECAUSE EVERYONE KNOWS HE SHOULD HAVE WON.

Adam will be another Idol loser like Chris Daughtry. He already is a star. And.... by losing American Idol, he is not locked into a winner’s contract. He will be able to sign for a better deal than Kris.

He is the only one I have heard that can do justice to Freddy Mercury’s parts with Queen. Now, that would be a good gig for him!

Yes, “everyone” knows that... erm, what? Adam is theatrical which is not current.

Says who? Have you noticed there has been a resurgence of the movie musical lately? The man can act and he can sing and he will be a huge star. Kris will do ok..but he's like so many others out there. He will get lost in the crowd. But I wish him luck. It's not his fault that little girls texted into the wee hours of the morning while they were fantasizing being married to Little Kris.

Adam lost it because he wussed out and sang nothing but soft, slow tunes. Well, DUH! Obviously that plays to Kris’ strength.

They all wimp out when it counts.

KISS was pretty awesome though :)

what on Earth are you talking about? Did we watch the same show. I admit that last song by Kara sucked, but they had to sing it. Nobody could have made that song sound good...but Adam came damn close.

Like who wins Idol really matters to what they can do later? Daughtry was fourth, wasn’t he?

(No, I’ve never watched Idol, either.)

Zac Efron, the current male movie musical star, is a lot less flamboyant than Glambert. I just don’t think his type is in now.

Kris won far more than the tween vote. In my circles (gay men and conservatives), it was split about 60/40 in favor of Kris. Adam was just too over the top for many of the gays (though I suspect you’ll accuse us of having the same fantasies as those girls).
