A sucker buys a new PC at the first signs of a slowdown. A savvy power user gives his aged PC a fighting chance for redemption. From tweaking your OS to compressing files to overclocking your videocard or CPU, there are plenty of ways to tune up a computer, and none require a trip to Bob’s House of New PCs. Follow along this step-by-step as we show you 21 of our favorite techniques for making a PC better, stronger, and faster — for free. These essential tweaks and tune-ups range from common-sense caretaking measures to practical adjustments that you'd be foolish to ignore. Combined, they release your PC's untapped potential and breathe new life into your system.

1. Secure Your Applications

You know to update your antivirus definitions and run Windows Update, but did you know about that massive security hole in Acrobat 8.0 or the potential risks of running that obscure unzipping app you favor? Probably not. That’s where Secunia’s Personal Software Inspector (http://secunia.com) comes in. PSI uses its massive database of security holes to monitor all the apps on your machine and let you know which ones need updating. PSI even provides a link to any available patches and is on constant vigilance for new application security holes as they arise.

I am looking thru the comments,...bit of discussion regarding using a vacuum vs compressed air....

I am going to cases that have good dust filters cause I have filthy air...really gums up the CPU heat sink fans and cooling fans..

I think those small handvacs for cars and couches should be just fine. I agree with the article... I wouldn’t use the most powerful home vac system money can buy.

“A sucker buys a new PC at the first signs of a slowdown.”

SHHHHHH! This is how I get new PC’s. People complain how slow their old computers are, so they tell me they’re getting a new one. Invariably, they think their old computer is ‘broken’ and not worth anything. So, I offer to take it off their hands for a few bucks. Put a fresh install of Ubuntu on it, and I got a blazing fast PC that’s only a couple of years old with free updates for life.

So just KEEP QUIET!

Ultimate Malware Removal Guide -- Purge Your PC of Junk Files!

***************************************EXCERPT*************************

Posted 01/29/09 at 09:00:00 AM | by Josh Kampschmidt

Malware is everywhere. You can't browse on any Internet tech forum without someone mentioning this word (with disdain), usually in search of a remedy after being infected with spyware. No matter how careful you are, we’re guessing that many of you have had malware inadvertently installed on your system and may have even ended up reformatting your computer as a last resort. While that may have been the most thorough solution, it is in a sense admitting defeat. Or worse yet, you took your computer to get cleaned and was charged anywhere from $50-300 -- a high price for humiliation. But don't fret, because you can actually purge your system of malicious software for free! Just follow our comprehensive guide.

Time = About 4 hours

1. Scrub your system with SUPERAntiSpyware
