My daughter bought an i-phone two weeks ago and was very pleased. Just this past week it froze and went dead. When she got it going again, she lost all her pics and music.

Her music and picture should be on the computer. The iPhone automatically backs-up to the computer and gets any new stuff from the computer when you plug it in... takes about two minutes to sync. The only pictures she could have lost were those she took on the iPhone after her last sync.

It is still only offered on AT&T, the worst cell phone company for reception and coverage. Get 5 miles outside Denver and coverage ends. I travel to a far corner of Colorado for hunting and AT&T has no coverage. Verizon has continous coverage.

I travelled from Southern Indiana to Central California December before last and had continuous coverage except for perhaps 5 minutes with AT&T. However, on a side trip to the Grand Canyon from IS40, there was no coverage on the road but did have coverage at the Grand Canyon. My daughter, who had Verizon, also had no coverage on the side trip until we reached the Grand Canyon. There simply were no cell towers for any service in the boonies.

In January of the following year, we went up the Northern California coast... no AT&T coverage but my daughter did have Verizon.

So you are right about the more limited coverage but where there has been coverage, I have never had any problem with reception.

Simple. 90-99 percent of websites with interactive or multimedia content use Flash.

My experience is that your 90-99% is way too high. It's more like 40-50% of interactive sites, with a heavy proportion of those being non-productive, amusement sites. I have found very few interactive websites, except Flash gamesites, that I cannot use with an iPhone.

Everything that Flash can do, can be accomplished by non-proprietary, international standards in HTML, Web 2.0, Java, etc. I can purchase merchandise, research data, view accounts, pay bills, etc. However, flash has some distinct drawbacks aside from the purely iPhone engineering ones of battery usage and CPU usage (Flash can sometimes occupy 100% of the CPU).

Why 100 Percent Flash Websites are Lousy for Usability and SEO"

That new iphone takes incredible, high-quality photos (don't know how many mp). I'm shooting with a dslr, which is great, but that would make a wonderful pocket camera and whatever else it has on it to boot.

The iPhone has an optical glass lens as compared to most phone cameras' plastic lenses. It helps. The iPhone and the iPhone 3G both have 2MP cameras which is not too great. The iPhone 3G S has a 3MP camera. That's just OK for snapshot work.

My biggest gripe about the iPhone camera is keeping that beautiful glass lens dust free. It picks up crud from being in sweatypockets and continually exposed to what's around in the environment. The iPhone first generation's lens is a little bit inset, making it even harder to clean. The 3G's lens is even with the surface and is easier to wipe clean.

The new 3G S's camera is auto-focusing but also has a tap-to-focus feature that allows the user to select which element on the screen she wants to use to focus on. This is great for focusing on an element that is behind the closest object. It should be more useful than previous iPhone cameras.

I know people who have them, and they do like the gadgets. I know several people who have GPS systems in their cars - it makes it easy for them to find the stores they use every day. I’ve traveled a lot in the past, never got lost, never worried about which way was north - but I do have a good sense of direction.
Guess if I was a traveling salesman I’d need one maybe.

Those numbers were not made up:

http://www.adobe.com/products/player_census/flashplayer/

That statistic is merely about the ubiquity of Flashplayer software on computers in "mature markets" around the world. It has nothing to do with the percentage of interactive websites using Flash.

Adobe and Apple are working in concert to develop a Flashplayer for the iPhone that does not suck resources and drain battery life beyond acceptable limits. Just as when 3G technology—which was omitted from the first generation iPhone because it ran the batteries down too rapidly—reached a economic battery usage and included in the 3G iPhone, Flash will eventually be allowed on the iPhone.

just what is it that Apple wants to achieve by avoiding Flash?

Oh, maybe it is because Flash sucks? H264 is the industry standard, Flash is proprietary, that should be simple enough to understand.

I wouldn't place AT&T as the worst, though they could well be in your area. In the areas that I travel, AT&T and Verizon are pretty equal. But you're right - Verizon has excellent coverage. Nextel is pretty bad once you get away from the cities. Don't know much about the others.

When she got it going again, she lost all her pics and music.

That can't happen if you actually hook it to a computer an sync it with iTunes. Do a restore from iTunes, unless you have never actually hooked it to a computer.

Yep - I’ve noticed some people have envied me for having an inexpensive phone that could do so much.

Yes, if you bought an iPhone 3G between May 9 and June 19 you can return it for a restocking fee and replace it with an iPhone 3G S.

Hey Swordmaker, this information at the linked article applies only to new iPhone buyers who got an iPhone 3G at an AT&T store. The process for upgrading is a bit different for those of us who went to the Apple Store to get our new iPhones.

I called the Apple store at Briarwood and they said to reserve the new iPhone 3G S at buyiphone.apple.com. (Of course, it was down for maintenance most of the day thanks to AT&T.) Now here's the trick. Check the circle under existing customers to ADD ANOTHER LINE -- don't check the upgrade circle or you'll freak because it'll want to charge you $399 for the new 3G S.

Checking ADD ANOTHER LINE will get you the $199 price (for the 16G iPhone 3G S), and within minutes, you'll get an email confirming that you've reserved a new iPhone.

You'll be able to exchange iPhones on the 19th. Bring the original packaging and accessories. The receipt isn't necessary, but they said it was helpful. They do expect a crowd on the 19th, but they said it shouldn't take longer than an hour and a half.

There is a short window to get the new customer upgrade price, so you have to act fast. As with AT&T, the magic date is May 9th. I made it by a mere two days. The Apple store wasn't sure what the "restocking fee" would be, but they were saying that it was probably in the $20-$30 range. I can't imagine why they'd charge more than the $20 AT&T is charging.

Again, thank you for posting this. But for you, I would have missed it because I was just sick that I hadn't waited and too sick to want to even look at that shiny new iPhone 3G S. This time next week, I'll have one!! And it's thanks to you, Swordmaker.

I didn’t know that. Wonder if Verizon regrets its decision.

I have been really happy with Sprint — so happy that I kept my old phone. One of these days I’m going to get rid of my landline.

I had to look at my “Welcome to AT&T” contract to find out what I’m paying and I’m actually paying less than what I thought. $39.99 for the 450 minutes, and $30.00 for the data plan. The ongoing monthly bill is supposed to be $80.16.

I’ve only paid one bill and that was a couple of days ago, and it included the activation fee. It was about $117.

I know what you’re saying. And I too had to look for a reason to get one. I finally found one when I priced Internet service for my cottage Up North. THAT was pricey! AT&T says there is 3G coverage up there, but there isn’t. Past Saginaw, I was on Edge. But at least now, I have something when I’m up there. Before I got the iPhone, I had to drive to the local library for WiFi on my laptop.

The 3G coverage is not what AT&T claims. When I drove to Chicago a couple of weeks ago, I was on Edge for quite a distance on I-94.

Oh, I know it’s not the iPhone. It’s AT&T. They can tether in Canada, but they don’t have the unlimited data package.

Plus for a while there was an app called Netshare ? that let you tether. But AT&T made sure that it quickly disappeared from the App Store. (You know they want to slap on an extra fee.) I’m not about to jailbreak my phone at this point.

I love you, Swordmaker.

OK, so how do you view flash content on an iPhone? Or don't you?

...apps will launch faster and that it will take less time to jump between apps, say, by clicking a link in an e-mail to open a Web page in the mobile Safari browser. Speaking of browsing, Web pages should render faster on the iPhone 3G S, too.
That compass "so you know which way you're facing" should keep the image of the ground ahead of you as the background image, so one doesn't trip as one stares at the iPhone screen while looking for the buried treasure or whatever else urbanites need iPhone compasses for. ;')

Re your #44. That's not good if it has no lens cover. My gdaughter says it doesn't zoom either. Kind of like the old days. 3.2 mp I think, too much going on to talk much about it. There was an early Olympus UZI, can't remember model #, w/3.2 mp that took astounding photos for the generation of camera it was.

She said hers cost $150, maybe she got a deal, then she has a 2-year contract. How much a month? You don't want to know. Guess it's $100.

If I ever get a cell phone, that would be nice, but I'd have to protect that lens somehow, see what you mean about that. I'm in no hurry to buy anything like that. I don't want a bunch of phone calls you see people are getting all the time but it would be nice for emergency type things.
