Recession hits Royal Ascot

Recession hit the races at Royal Ascot yesterday with even royalty getting their outfits off the peg.

Frugal Princess Beatrice led the way in a Kate Moss for Topshop jacket, priced at a modest £90, with a pair of £65 two-tone shoes from Office.

Unfortunately, when you reduce yourself to the level of mere mortals, embarrassments can occur - and another racegoer was seen wearing an identical Philip Treacy hat.

Colour was most definitely the order of the day - led by the Queen who sported a bright yellow hat.

Also in the royal party, who arrived according to tradition in a fleet of landaus, were the Duchess of Cornwall, looking particularly chic in a bespoke Vivienne Westwood dress and coat, and Princess Anne who brightened things up in a tangerine-coloured jacket and hat with a startling pair of ski-type sunglasses.

Intriguingly, Camilla and Anne appeared to get on like a house on fire. While the rest of their party took their seats in the royal box for the first race, the two women stayed in the parade ring, gossiping about odds as they shared a form guide.

The traditional royal race meet appeared to have been hit by the current economic crisis in other ways. Although figures have yet to be confirmed, attendance was definitely down and staff at the numerous champagne bars stood around twiddling their thumbs.

Oh, I take that back. I didn’t even see her. I thought that hat was a barrier of some kind.

Queen Elizabeth’s skin is younger and smoother than the Rottweiler’s.

Elizabeth is still so beautiful! With all her faults, she has been a rock in so many ways for the traditional duties. Camilla makes me skeeve....oh, puleeeeeeease.

Here's Simon Cowell in a formal morning suit with waistcoat, and a bunch of trashy show biz females at Ascot:

That one cracked me up. She's going to need some chiropractic care after wearing that thing around all day.

Camilla's visage is as hideous as her soul.

What do you mean, she has to wear both of those things every day?!

Thanks, Leni, for the detailed fashion analysis.

Style and tradition are never meaningless. Ascot, and English traditions have greatly influenced American fashion. Ralph Lauren built his fashion empire on bringing “that look” to the American market.

I loved Princess Anne’s dashing orange. It is a color most would never dare to wear.

I agree with you about Anne’s hat. It’s a striking colour, and a very interesting design.

They certainly did show Camilla, and she did look lovely. Her cream colored outfit was very flattering.

Comparisons to MOBama are misplaced. Camilla is a very intelligent, well bred gorl from an excellent family. She is totally discreet and dresses for her role.
