India brides had 'virginity test'
By Faisal Mohammad Ali in Bhopal
India's National Commission for Women wants Madhya Pradesh state to explain why hundreds of would-be brides reportedly underwent virginity tests.
All the women who took part in a state-run mass wedding last month were forced to take the test, witnesses say.
Several of the women later complained that they had found the exercise shameful and humiliating.
Officals deny virginity tests took place. They said the tests had been to ensure the women were not pregnant.
In India, a bride's virginity is highly prized and pre-marital sex is frowned upon.
'Dubious'
According to reports, young women who had signed up for the mass marriage ceremony in the city of Shahdol, 600km (373 miles) from the state capital, Bhopal, were told about the test when they reached the venue.
Such a shameful act where girls had to reportedly undergo tests to prove their chastity to avail the government's financial aid were sinful
Almost all of them were from poor, tribal families.
Eyewitnesses said the women had to queue up before undergoing an extensive physical examination by a female doctor before they were given a special badge which allowed them to participate in the ceremony.

What’s that got to do with having sex?
Got it.
Well, it was the 1960’s.
No one is compelling one to be a Catholic in America.
So if a woman wants to have premarital sex by breaking her Catholic tradition, it is her choice to do so. She is not being forced into that faith, and she would have no compulsion to digress from the tenets of her faith.
With Muslims in Muslim societies, that is not the case. Whether a woman wishes to have premarital sex or not, she must stick to Islam, and if she breaks the adultery rule, she will have hell to pay, in those cultures.
Hmm, 60s.
That makes it much more sensible.
I still don’t understand why you think Muslim girls would have sex instead of Catholics? Do you really think teenagers having sex is dependent on their religious beliefs?
Yea, I mean, indulging in adultery is not something someone who believes in Catholicism, would do. Or attempt to skirt around the rules. For if they do so, it would be meaningless to call themselves Catholic.
If women do want to break free of the rules, they have no compulsion to stay Catholic, here in America.
Perhaps it’s the same with other faiths.
Holy crap, I'm using that in the future. That is spot on.
