A simple comparison of reporting - The "Birther" issue and media bias

Posted on 08/04/2009 7:49:08 PM PDT by jameslalor

I have become increasingly infuriated over the condescending and outright insulting reporting of the "Birther" issue in the news media. As such, I thought it would be an interesting exercise to locate a news article describing the concerns about John McCain's eligibility that existed back before the primaries and compare the tone of the reporting to a more recent article that describes the current concerns about Barack Obama's eligibility.

As I am publicly decrying bias, I should take a moment to describe where my own bias lies. It is important to note that I really believe the birth certificate issue should be a "non-issue". I could care less where Barry was born, as our courts are not going to dare trying to oust the President, nor would the current majorities in Congress be particularly inclined towards impeaching the Messiah-In-Chief (regardless of whether he was a citizen or not, and regardless of whether he ate a baby on live television or not).

What bugs me though is that the issue could and should have been resolved before the election by the simple expedient of releasing the pertinent records. Instead, we have an elitist lawyer in office that must derive some secret sense of accomplishment or some innate feeling of cleverness from spending enormous quantities of money fighting court battles to prevent the release of something as simple as his proof of citizenship.

With that declaration of bias aside, on to the fun stuff. I did a Google News search on McCain's birth and Obama's birth.

The first really significant article I found on the former is titled: "A Citizen, but 'Natural Born'?" published by the New York Times back in July of 2008. Link - http://www.nytimes.com/2008/07/11/us/politics/11mccain.html

An excerpt from said article:

"In the most detailed examination yet of Senator John McCain’s eligibility to be president, a law professor at the University of Arizona has concluded that neither Mr. McCain’s birth in 1936 in the Panama Canal Zone nor the fact that his parents were American citizens is enough to satisfy the constitutional requirement that the president must be a “natural-born citizen.”"

Compare the subtle difference in tone and inherent respectfulness to the first pertinent article I could find on Obama's eligbility, published by the Washington Post just today:

"If there's been a more clinically insane political phenomenon in my lifetime than the "birthers," I've missed it. Is this what our national discourse has come to? Sheer paranoid fantasy? I'm talking about the people who have convinced themselves that Barack Obama was not really born in the United States, and thus is ineligible to be president."

Here's a link to the rest of the article: http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2009/08/03/AR2009080302219.html?hpid=opinionsbox1

Perhaps I'm just another clinical insane paranoid, but I detect subtle hints of hypocrisy, intellectual dishonesty and outright political bias disguised as "reporting".

The Communist regime of Comrade 0bama and his Pravda government controlled media, use exactly the same play book as the Communist Party of the ex-Soviet Union.
Back in day, anyone whodared to challenge the legitimacy of the brutal, dictatorial Communist regimes, was likely to be propmtly declared “insane” and carted off to the nut house..that is if he was lucky enough not to be shipped to the Gulags in Siberia, to die of overwork, and extreme cold and hunger.
0bama’s thugs and media propagandists are every bit as evil as the ex-communist regimes of the Eastern Block countries.

Well, I just gotta bump this thread. It has 2 of my favorite topics: Media Bias and Certifigate.

here’s a previous post:

I think one of the quantifiable issues is liberal media bias. I’ve been trying to develop a Media Bias Index that could be traded against on Intrade...

Poll: How much Media Bias is there in the MainStream Media?
http://politicalref.com/user_polls/polls/media_bias_2-23-09.php

These results are being included for consideration in a Media Bias Index that I’ve been trying to convince John Delaney, CEO of Intrade, to generate as a contract that could be traded on.

This particular poll will generate results to correlate and align with the mediabiasratings.com set up.

Never will understand that sort of defeatest thinking. In other words, this person would care about where Obama was born IF he could know for sure that something could be done about it. Well hell, let’s all take on that frame of mind in our daily lives since it is apparently considered reasonable by a lot of folks. I’d report that my neighbor is molesting his daughter but family services probably won’t do anything about it. I would report that there’s about 50 illegal aliens working next door but I doubt anything would be done so I’ll just ignore it.

What a bunch of pansy ass excuses for not standing up for what is right no matter what the outcome may be!
