This post reminds me of an amusing encounter I had a couple of years ago.
A friend of mine who is a solo Wiccan drove her best friend down here for business, and I met them for the evening at their hotel. The friend, “Melanie,” was also a Wiccan. When it came up in conversation that I am atheist, Melanie recommended a particular book for me so that I could get started (in my presumed desire to become Wiccan, apparently).
I must have looked perturbed, and of course our mutual friend was mortified, begging me with her eyes that I not take insult. Luckily Melanie did not continue that line of conversation, and was soon distracted by a shiny object or something.
You see, my own presumption was that I would be safe from any boorish attempt at religious conversion. And among most pagans, I still assume that. (Although in retrospect, I understand why my friend had refused my offer to house them while they were in town.)
