SEPTEMBER 13, 2009 U.S. Open Diary: Clijsters def. Wozniacki 7-5, 6-3

By Matthew Futterman

The Journal provides minute-by-minute analysis of tonight’s U.S. Open women’s singles final as Kim Clijsters of Belgium defeated ninth-seeded Caroline Wozniacki of Denmark 7-5, 6-3 at Arthur Ashe Stadium in New York. Journal staffer Matthew Futterman offers commentary on the match and the ESPN2 telecast.

Unseeded Kim Clijsters has flourished since ending a two-year retirement earlier this summer. 10:59: The last game is a microcosm of this match. Wozniacki goes up love-30 but lets Clijsters back in to close out the match 7-5, 6-3. Well done, Kim, and welcome back.

10:52: Clijsters just nailed a backhand winner to get to game point and then a forehand winner to get to one game away. This is a brilliant run on her part, coming back after having a baby. If she pulls it off, she’s the first mom-Grand Slam winner in nearly 30 years. 5-2, second set. Seemingly only a matter of time.

10:49: So, Caroline, what happened to the moonball? It was working, it really was, but we haven’t seen it since the first set. Bring back Andrea Jaeger, and you can get back into this match.

10:46: Does anyone know how to hit a forehand while doing a split the way Clijsters does?

10:42: Narrow margin between these two — though if Clijsters keeps playing, the margin will be much larger eight months from now. The difference seems to be Clijsters is able to come up with a big first serve or a cross-court winner when she...

not bad for a wildcard entry.. good job USTA. Such a contrast to the screaming drama queens... two classy ladies. Wosniaki (sp?) was amazing in that she thanked the crowd and then spoke Polish and Danish to her fans in Europe. Amazing comeback for Clijsters as well. It's nice to see a husband cradle her and plant a big one on her kisser like ,"well done honey".. just an all around nice deal.

The USMC and opening ceremony were nice at the beginning as well.
