We're not lovin' it … McDonald's is UK's most-hated brand

FAST food giant McDonald's has been named as Britain's most-hated brand in a new survey by marketing experts. The American burger chain – unpopular with 46 per cent of consumers – topped a list of the least-liked brands which featured some of the country's biggest names.

Tesco was second most hated in the poll for Marketing magazine, followed by Coca-Cola and the discount fashion chain Primark.

However, the research showed some of the most well-known brands also attracted consumers in equal measure.

Tesco and Coca-Cola were also voted Britain's sixth and seventh most loved brands respectively.

Both were more loved than hated, with 66 per cent backing for Tesco and 51 per cent for Coca-Cola. McDonald's attracted 36 per cent support.

Brand experts said dislike of McDonald's derived from health concerns and its market dominance.

Charlie Robertson, of Glasgow's Red Spider brand consultancy, said: "People are worried about growing obesity and fast food, while they also dislike McDonald's for its bland Americanising of the high street."

However, he said polarised opinion over major brands – the so-called "Marmite effect" – was simply because they were so high profile. He said: "If you are big, you are going to attract more negative opinion."

Marketing said the most hated brands were typically seen as being of poor quality and value for money, unreliable, and having irritating advertising.

Primark and Nestle were singled out for their perceived poor ethical record, over sourcing and marketing in poor countries. Sky and BT were seen as providing services that consumers were more likely to have a strong opinion about when things went wrong.

The brands topping the most-loved list made popular "comfort" products – such as Cadbury for its chocolate and Heinz for soup and baked beans.

I have to agree. Brits need to stick to nourishing and flavorful standards like haggis, steak-and-kidney pie and blood pudding.

The Brits love their horrid Blimpy brand sawdust burgers. Just looking up the name it looks like they’ve managed to infiltrate everything.

The American Midwest plus the NYC Burroughs and New Jersey.

Ukian people are not entitled to White Castles.

McDonalds has a new meaning for me. In August I did a series of promotions for the new Angus Burger at three Philadelphia area restaurants. Ronald and I shared the work. He did clown things the first hour and I did a “western” dance program the next hour. Small children are a challenge but I’ve done a number of parties for that demo over the years.

The only thing that matters is the revenue figures.

Tesco is great. It TOTALLY replaced the ‘Yuppie-fied’ ‘Sainsbury’s’......and competed with stores like ‘Morrison’s’ (which was absolute CRAP). Good to have a bit of competition, eh? It defines ‘middle of the road’. Most of the baby clothes I bought was from Tesco. Incridibly GOOD quality.

TV dinners are more appetizing than British food.

Meanwhile, in France, the French have literally gobbled up McDonald's very quickly, if you read this article from Washington Post's online magazine Slate:

How McDonald's conquered France

McDonald's went out of its way to integrate itself into the finicky French food culture; the result is enormous profits for McDonald's operation in France.

I find McDonalds disgusting. Their stores are filthy. I can eat a Big Mac for nostalgia’s sake but not the fries which are not like they used to be.

Tesco, which in America is “Fresh & Easy” is a dump. I wouldn’t buy food there if you paid me.

Yep, I don't blame them, it just not right the way McDonalds' sends clown squads around to break down peoples doors and force Big Mac's down their throats causing this obesity crisis...(Sarcasm Off)

I dumped some leftover fries on the snow on winter so that birds or other critters could eat them. I watched them sit there all winter. No animal was stupid enough to eat them.

A skilled British cook is one who can boil water without burning it. All their best cooks are imported from France, India, Italy or anywhere else.

The only other country who can compete with them as the world's worst cooks is possibly Germany.

McDonalds has Ronald McDonald Houses all over the place for families who have children in hospitals. I have, unfortunately, become very familiar with them of late, visiting family with a gravely ill child. They provide a safe place to live for families who have to travel away from home so their children can get medical treatment.

The fee is only $10 a night, but they don't require anyone to pay if they cannot. They also provide a fully stocked kitchen for those who can no longer afford to buy food to cook. The houses also have laundry facilities, play areas for the other children in the family and plenty of "quiet areas" where parents can go to be alone with their thoughts. They also provide event tickets, etc., to provide a little diversion to the parents and families stressed life. You walk through a Ronald McDonald House and you will begin to count your blessings and thank God for giving you and yours good health.

People bad mouth McDonalds, but they are doing God's work in a number of ways. Plus, as someone posted, no one is forced to eat there against their will.

If I have the time and I’m by myself, I’ll go to Burger King and order a whopper, hit Wendy’s for some fries and Taco Bell for a Pepsi.
