NEW YORK (AP)Andy Pettitte and the New York Yankees wrapped up the AL East title and home-field advantage throughout the postseason with a neat bow, beating the Boston Red Sox 4-2 Sunday for their 100th win of the year.
Hideki Matsuis go-ahead single in the sixth inning energized the damp fans and put them on notice that a party was coming. The first real celebration at the new Yankee Stadium began with a most familiar sceneMariano Rivera(notes) on the mound, closing out another clinching victory.

I certainly would not cry if they do. Might kill old man Steinbrenner though.
Bttt
I’m a fan of Jim Leyland so I wish them well too.
I don’t mean to be cold, but perhaps by putting all their faith in Democrats, they did it to themselves. I just feel bad for the conservatives left there that don’t have the numbers to boot the libs out of office, ESPECIALLY that whack job of a governor.
Your right. Anything can happen.
I like the Yankees odds with CC, Burnett and Andy in round one of the playoffs.
GO YANKS!
Where are the BoSox fans who were saying the Yankees are finished as a championship team? ROFLMAO!
I’d like to see a Yankees-Dodgers World Series. Reminds me of the good ol’ days!
W00t!
Hard to argue with the Cardinals and Yankees as the favorites, but they shouldn’t look past the Phillies or Red Sox, respectively. If the Phillies match up very well against the Cardinals as long as they can clean up the confusion in their bullpen, and the Red Sox have a definite edge in pitching over the Yankees.
The Yanks win 100, lock up both the division and the home field advantage, and tie the season series with the Red Sox at 9 games apiece after losing their first 8 games. Great day to be a Yankee fan. Now they have almost 2 weeks to rest players. ...a few of whom need it badly (to heal injuries).
I’m hoping for a Yanks v. Red Sox ALCS (revenge for ‘04) and a Yanks v. Dodgers WS (revenge for ‘81). ...with the Yanks winning their 27th WS title.
Good analysis.
As a Cardinals fan I can honestly say I would rather eat barbed wire than have to play a series against the Phillies. Let the Dodgers deal with them.
Reverse lock theory...which is exactly why neither will be there.
As they say in the armed services, hope is not a plan. That lone AL East title flying over New Yankee Stadium will look pretty silly.
Did I miss something or are they still going to play the post season? I didn't realize they were just going to hand the WS title to the Yankees. I wouldn't count your chickens so fast. You might find that egg on your face is hard to get off.
How many WS have the Bosux won?
