The name recognition surely cant hurt, but Joe Kennedy, a high-tech whiz kid who plans to become the next junior U.S. senator from Massachusetts, hopes to win voters over on his own.
Joseph L. Kennedy, 37, of Dedham, a member of the National Libertarian Party collecting signatures to run as an independent, has established a Web site: JoeKennedyforSenate.com. He is not to be confused with Joseph P. Kennedy II, 57, whose decision not to run for his late uncle Edward M. Kennedys Senate seat left the famous familys faithful wistful.
I wouldnt say Im politically active, but you cant sit around and complain all the time and do nothing about it, said the lesser-known Kennedy, a bachelor and 1993 Clark University graduate.
He sees himself as the choice for voters fed up with wealthy Democrats and Republicans fighting with each other, while ignoring the common folk who put them in power.
Unless you are a person who is being negatively affected by whats going on in society, you dont have a full grasp of the issues, he said.
Heres his take on hot-button debates:
Healthcare reform: Opposes it as presently proposed.
The wars in Iraq and Afghanistan:We need to get out of both of them.
Abortion: Im pro-choice.
Immigration: They have to give back to the society theyre living in. Weve got to stop giving away stuff for free.
Same-sex marriage: Believes this to be a decision best left to individual religions.
Kennedy sees his greatest obstacle as party, not any one candidate.
lol. This guys moxie just might get him elected.
“a member of the National Libertarian Party”
...no chance of winning but a nice start!
Joseph L. Kennedy: DO YOU KNOW WHO HE IS??
Howie list ping
Disregarding his other views, but imagine a Kennedy who believes:
>> Healthcare reform: Opposes it as presently proposed.
>> Immigration: They have to give back to the society theyre living in. Weve got to stop giving away stuff for free.
Never know, lightning might strike here. What if he gets into the debates, and is at least semi-articluate. But what will probably beat him is the dem machine in mass.
DEM PARTY REFUSES TO ALLOW KENNEDY INTO DEBATE
FIRST KENNEDY TO LOSE A SENATE SEAT IN MASS.
Some Herald comments wonder if the name will fool some voters though the “L” for Libertarian, if they notice that part, might make them realize...
KENNEDY FOR SENATE bumper stickers at the ready...?
I’m worried he’ll draw voters away from the Republican. We might have a shot. If he ran as a Communist, ok.
He’s a little too “pure” a libertarian for me. I’m a libertarian, but my take on immigration is simple: once we fix (i.e., kill) the welfare state, admit anyone who can show he (or she) is not likely to be a burden on the public. I’d adopt more or less the same immigration policy as New Zealand: they welcome English speaking college graduates with $500,000 in assets.
Now THAT’s a Joe Kennedy I’ll be voting for!
Which brings to mind the guy named John F. Kennedy who was a school janitor in Chelsea or something who ran for state treasurer in 1962 on the Democratic ticket and, needless to say, won.
This sounds like a movie script. Has anyone ever seen the 1992 film “The Distinguished Gentleman?” with Eddie Murphy. He was a con man with the same name of the recently deceased congressman, played by James Garner. Murphy’s character got on the ballot as an independent and pulled off an election night upset purely on name recognition.
Yeah, I saw it and it was funny. I think the movie was inspired by the kennedy name electability. Put a homeless insane person with the last name kennedy up for election and he will win up there.
Funny movie. Do you think Independent Joe Kennedy will go to the Dem Kennedy family and ask for their old signs and campaign stuff like the movie?
Your post makes the possibility of this guy in the race more interesting. If he fights to get into the debates, and the dems oppose him, the headline you list may actually occur. Old Joe Kennedy would be spinning in his grave if he wasn’t already doing a back-flip from his son handing over his mantel to a . . .
Illinoisian? Ya, that’s what I meant to say.
Perhaps the State legislature will try to draft a law that forbids someone to run for office using the name “Kennedy” unless they are related to JFK.
I was thinking along the same lines. He's better check six - the Kennedys© will not be amused.
Carla Howell, libertarian, got more votes (13%, iirc) than the republican challenger in 2000 when they went for Scumbag Teddy's seat.
Joe Kennedy is no Tea Party candidate- the Tea Party express endorsed Scott Brown. Joe Kennedy is a lifelong Democrat/Independent, code pinko, pro-abortion Trojan horse.
Don’t be fooled. Conservative Scott Brown is the candidate endorsed by the Tea Party Express and represents are values far more than Kennedy or Coakley.
