So exactly what is the prescribed method for putting a dog down? When I was growing up, you could take the dog out to he woods and shoot it. Do you have to take it to a vet now? Is that the only option?

Seriously, I don't know what the rules are these days. A while back we had a thread about someone who had a litter of unwanted kittens or puppies, so they put them in a sack and threw them in the river. Apparently the community was outraged and people were calling for the death penalty for such heinous cruelty.
I dunno. That used to be standard procedure. But now you can't do that with cats and dogs. Baby humans, maybe -- but not cats and dogs.

I guess it’s the difference between having a conscience and not having a conscience to prevent unnecessary pain.

I don’t see the “compare” I read it more along the lines of drawing parallels.

In Louisiana there’s a deer hunting dog breed so pure that when a litter is born and set on the trail of their first deer chase ever, the last two pups in the pack running after the deer are shot and the first two coming back after the deer is killed are shot.
And it is no one’s business how your pets are put down unless where you live has a specific law governing it.

Very possibly the only option would be to take the dog to the vet to be humanely euthanized.

the last two pups in the pack running after the deer are shot and the first two coming back after the deer is killed are shotA typical litter is four pups, occasionally five. There is a huge amount of government grant money being made available to researchers to determine the reason for their rarity.

That gives a good picture of why Lousiana is 44th on
this list ....LOL
It's also time to update that state and bring it out bararianism and into the 20th century.
