Best-selling author Carolyn Jessop will receive support to care for her disabled son for the rest of his life in a settlement reached Tuesday with her former husband, who oversees a polygamous sect's enclave in Texas. Merril Jessop, 73, agreed to pay $2,350 monthly to his former spiritual wife to support the seven children in her care, with a dollar-for-dollar credit for his Social Security benefit that is currently diverted to her. -SNIP- They had eight children together before Carolyn Jessop left the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in April 2003. Their oldest daughter Betty, now 20, returned to the sect after graduating from high school and lives in Texas with her father, who is the bishop at the Yearning for Zion Ranch in Eldorado. The rest remain with Carolyn Jessop, who chronicled her marriage in the 2007 book Escape . They range in age from 22 to 8. -SNIP- As part of the agreement, Texas attorney Natalie Malonis, who represented Carolyn Jessop, withdrew various exhibits she planned to use during the child support trial. |
Polygamy ping
Her book was riveting. The husband was definitely a candidate for the asylum. What a nightmare life those women have had imposed on them. Bless her and here’s hoping she can get on with her life now, safe from being kidnapped and returned to slavery along with her kids.
Doesn’t this essentially legalize polygamy?
I don't think so. Unmarried couples who have kids together are often required to pay child support to the parent who has custody of the child.
I think anyone other than the first wife should be called what they really are: concubines.
Biblically, that'd be servant girls...
...maidens owned by mistresses ("mistress" as in the female version of "master")...
...often were slaves.
Too bad about that. I'm sure the contents are fascinating. And in the long run, it might well be cheaper for the state(s) to just pay Carolyn directly, and be free to use the information in these exhibits to go after Merril and his cronies. who have plenty of seizable assets.
I misread the article. I thought this was some form of alimony, not child support.
I'm not sure I understand this part. It sounds like she is currently getting his social security benefit, and the $2350 he now pays will include that benefit. if so, the difference in the money she gets sounds like it will be a lot less than $2350.
There’s nothing biblical about what happened to her so I think the term concubine is applicable.
Her hubby in also under indictment. Might be tough for him to pay later this year.

This is good. Fathers should support their children. Period.
