Polar Bear Spotted Riding On Its Mother's Back

[Pic in URL] Polar bear cubs ride 'piggy back' on their mother's back to avoid falling into the freezing waters of the Arctic, according to new scientific evidence.

By Louise Gray, Environment Correspondent 05 Oct 2009

The behaviour has been observed in the wild before by polar bears emerging from the den for the first time or crossing open water.

However there was little research into the phenomenon and no photographic evidence.

Now a photograph by a British tourist has proved that polar bear cubs often hitch a ride with their mothers.

Angela Plumb was holidaying in Duvefjorden, Nordaustlandet, when she spotted the mother bear with a seven-month-old cub hitching a ride.

"The cub was on the back of the polar bear when it was in the water, then it got out of the water and stayed on its mother's back a little, then she shook it off," she said.

Seeing the bear had a radio collar, Mrs Plumb contacted Dr Jon Aars from the Norwegian Polar Institute in Tromso.

He had heard about the phenomenon, but said there was little photographic evidence.

Scientist’s believe that the ice was so hot from “Goebbels Warning” , that the cub had burned feet and had to ride on it’s mothers back.

Instead, it looks like the current regime will take that job.

And one picture proves "often"? Oy vey, this is science???

Actually, it is probably quite common.

Last week someone made some comment to me about the "sad state of the polar bears drifting on icebergs because of all the global warming." This whole notion trades on the general ignorance of how polar bears live. I told him I had never looked but that I would bet that my 1979 Encyclopedia Britannica would suggest that all the stuff now portrayed as unusual was actually quite normal for polar bears. I would have won my bet! In the small article specifically about Polar Bears, EB says:

semi-aquatic northern bear, family Ursidae, found throughout Arctic regions, generally on drifting oceanic ice floes.
In a separate, larger article, about carnivorous mammals it says this:
Polar Bears have been noted in the open sea 40 miles from the nearest shore and on ice 200 miles from the nearest land.
If you think about it, if these bears are generally found drifting on ice floes, and it were getting warmer, then the ice floes would melt sooner and the bears would only be found CLOSER to land now than in the past. Of course, Al Gore and the Global Warming crowd are hoping that no one will do much thinking.

...unfortunately, the baby polar bear had to hold on so tight, it dropped its bottle of refreshing Coca-Cola (TM).

Can anyone help me out? I was in the UK recently and found out that my niece, a graduate from a very good university and now going for her Bachelors Degree, is a LIBERAL! She tried to get me into a discussion trying to get me to prove that global warming wasn’t happening. I countered that her side have not shown one fact pointing to the fact that it’s caused by man.

I need something to prove to her once and for all that man is not responsible and it’s happened over and over again in the past.

Thanks in advance.

I MAY be common. One picture does not prove it.

Overlay a timeline of recorded history (5000 years is good) with a graph of established ice ages (which are always followed by warming periods ... for extra emphasis add a timeline for the invention and popularity of the SUV. Conclusion? Earth’s climate changes over time and its not our fault. Nite. ;-)

That poor baby polar bear ... riding it’s mother’s back because it’s too weak to walk because there’s not enough to eat because the ice cap is melting because of global warming because Algore opened his mouth.

I’m not the one to ask. I just know everything I’ve learned here on Free Republic. I’m sure there are some who can help, though.
