Joe Paterno Top Of The World, Pa!
Sports Illustrated ^ | 10-26-09 | JOE POSNANSKI

Angelo, look at the way your son's eyes darken now. Look how he balls up his fists and uncrosses his legs, as if he's uncomfortable, as if he suddenly remembered someplace he needs to be. Look how the smile on his face—the smile that punctuates all the stories he tells, like the one about Bear Bryant wanting a lane of traffic cleared for his team (the Pennsylvania governor said no), or the time at a coaches' convention that Dan Devine mentioned an unnamed loudmouth coach at Oklahoma, and Barry Switzer shouted, "Switzer!" and raised his hand—look how that grandfatherly smile twists into a grimace. Madonn'! Someone is asking Joe Paterno about the wins record. Again.

From a Canes fan stuck in the Ohio Valley I say, “Good luck Joe Pa!” I love this guy! I admit it does have something to do with the competition between him and Bobby Bowden. Dad gum it!

He has earned the respect of College Football a long time ago. He will always have it. State College should be proud.

It is an interesting look into why Joe is much more than a football coach.

Joe is a likable guy. Also one of the great football coaches.

The one mark against him and it might not be his doing but Beano Cook pointed out several years ago that Penn State used to quite literally have refs cheat for them. That is such a radical statement I was surprised he said it on national TV.

He showed a particular play in which an Alabama receiver caught a game winning TD pass. The ref ruled him out of bounds and he must have been six feet inside the line.

It turned out the ref who made that call had a Son playing For Penn State.

Yeah...Joe cheats.

The instance you are referring to is Mike Guman’s father. Mike was not on the team at the time, and his father did NOT make the call that decided that TD/noTD for Bama. He was on the crew, but he didn’t make the call. Nice try though.

Canes fan here too. Joe has run a clean program too. Bowden will never catch Joe PA in wins and the NCAA is going to take 14 wins from Bowden too.

I know those days. PS agreed to play TN as long as they had lights. Tennessee said OK. PS Lost bad. It’s been a war ever since.

There is really no contest or race when one looks objectively at Bobby’s first 31 wins:

1 Howard 14, Maryville (Tenn.) 0
2 Howard 20, Sewanee (Tenn.) 0
3 Howard 34, Tenn. Tech (B team) 0
4 Howard 26, Millsaps (Miss.) 0
5 Howard 14, Tennessee-Martin 13
6 Howard 16, Southwestern (Tenn.) Lynx 0
7 Howard 24, Livingston (Ala.) State 0
8 Howard 20, Troy State 19
9 Howard 52, Gordon Military College 20
10 Howard 14, Maryville (Tenn.) 0
11 Howard 56, Sewanee (Tenn.) 0
12 Howard 41, Georgetown (Ky.) 0
13 Howard 42, Millsaps (Miss.) 0
14 Howard 28, Mississippi Delta 14
15 Howard 22, Livingston (Ala.) State 6
16 Howard 26, Southwestern (Tenn.) Lynx 0
17 Howard 48, Troy State 14 .
18 Howard 60, Memphis Navy 0
19 Howard 64, Georgetown (Ky.) 6
20 Howard 16, Wofford (S.C.) 13
21 Howard 20, Mississippi Delta 14
22 Howard 18, Carson-Newman (Tenn.) 7
23 Howard 34, Southwestern (Tenn.) Lynx 7
24 Howard 80, Troy State 0
25 Howard 22, Chattanooga (Tenn.) 13
26 Howard 40, University of Mexico 0
27 Howard 14, Louisiana College 12
28 Howard 14, Furman 7
29 Howard 47, Carson-Newman (Tenn.) 0
30 Howard 21, Mississippi College 3
31 Howard 34, Wofford (S.C.) 28

For the NCAA to count these wins is a joke. Their rationale is that once a coach reaches a point that 1/2 of their wins are actual Division 1A wins, then they ALL count.

So look for Tressell to have ALL of his YSU wins count and he will suddenly be the one of the top ten winningest coaches in NCAA history. Crazy.

PSU has slapped TN every time they’ve played them in the last 2 decades...what specifically are you referring to?

The record is 3-2 PSU.

My age catches me...http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1971_college_football_season

. #5 Penn State took its unbeaten (10-0-0) record to face #12 Tennessee (8-2-0), and lost, 31-11.

My best

Just exactly what the hell are you talking about? Nobody ever claimed Penn State got robbed of anything. Tennessee lost the games. As well Penn State lost those games. Be careful on your mantras their hotshot. These posts are here to stay. :^)

As far as you guys talking about outcomes. You better keep Tennessee out of it. We had a Florida guy running our program and stayed out of it.

Tennessee has ties to PSU. They have ties to UCLA. A great game on network is most enjoyable. Thats why I love all these guys. It's doable but the old school may be just that. The PSU-TN stuff will come back but it takes character and damn good food to get that back.

How the mighty have fallen. For ten years or longer Sandusky was buggering young boys. JoPa was informed and just passed along the message but did not do anything else. Sandusky was his friend and heir apparent. Whether Paterno compartmentalized this and put it out of his mind, or knowingly did what he could to cover it up, we may never know. But all he has done in his career with PSU since his first days beginning in the 1960’s has now been eclipsed by this terrible scandal. He now will retire to receive instead of accolades criminal and civil subpoenas, likely for the rest of his life. So, so sad.
