NBC’s ‘Law & Order’ to Take on Abortion Issue (airing tonight)

LOS ANGELES — “Law & Order,” the long-running NBC series about crime and punishment, rarely shies away from inflammatory topics, and Friday night it takes on one of the most contentious — abortion — for just the third time in the program’s 20 seasons.

In the show’s customary ripped-from-the-headlines style, the new episode focuses on the murder, in a church, of a doctor who performs late-term abortions. Though the episode, which will be broadcast at 8 p.m. Eastern and Pacific time, begins with the disclaimer that the story “is fictional and does not depict any actual person or event,” its outlines closely track the case of Dr. George R. Tiller, a prominent provider of late-term abortions who was shot and killed in a church in Wichita, Kan., on May 31.

I've been watching the episode tonight. It's surprisingly balanced. They stole the story line from the Chicago area where the late-term baby was left to die after initially surviving the abortion.

It's been moving and again, surprising balanced in it's representation of the pro-life movement.

I haven’t watched L&O in a few years. To me the best years were the first several.

Sounds to me it’s more about the murder of Tiller than abortion itself.

Watching right know. Tiller is the primary story-line, but it ALL about abortion. It's a tearjerker.

I liked the earlier eps better overall too. I preferred Michael Moriarty to Sam Waterstone as the prosecutor, and the earlier eps had a grittier feel to them.

That said, my favorite cop combo came on the later shows with Jerry Orbach (Briscoe) and Jesse L. Martin (Green). Those two seemed to have the best chemistry, plus anything with Orbach is worth watching, IMHO. Never cared too much for Chris Noth, liked George Dzunda okay.

Can’t the show’s writers come up with some original concepts for storylines? Just asking.

It’s not on here yet. I haven’t watched a single episode of L&O, so it won’t bother me to miss one more.

I'm telling you, watch it. The first 20 minutes represent the typical liberal blather. But, the rest of it is pretty powerful, and very respectful of the pro-life position. The explore late-term abortion in a very powerful and moving way and clearly from a pro-life position. As I said, it's very surprising that this is on network tv.

Incidentally, I loathe this show - only catch it once or twice a year.

I can’t stand the smug, sanctimonious Sam Waterstone....

Always love the approach that people are hypocrites if the are for the death penalty, but against abortion. As though the small matter of innocence doesn't exist.

I've been confronted on this before and simply explained that I am 100% consistent. No innocent person should be put to death by another. Amazing how many blank stares that I've gotten in return.

I liked Moriarity a lot in L&O. After him, Jerry O. was the main reason I watched it. George D. was OK and I liked Logan fairly well. I also liked that Cragan got a gig on SVU.

Great Point, no innocent person.

how about a special 2 hour episode where a guy that doesnt meet a certain Constitutional requirement becomes President. Then when when the truth is revealed all the legal whacky hi-jinks that ensue. Heck, make it a season long story arc.

I stopped watching L&O after the SVU segment where a pregnant woman was killed and the supposedly Catholic, pro-life male character (Stabler) made the comment that “abortion is different, that’s the mother’s choice.”

Oh... right.

I saw a little of it. Not bad.

I have to say Richard Thomas has aged well.

Richard Thomas does look good.

Out of all the L&O characters, I liked Jill Hennessy’s Claire Kincaid the best.
