WICHITA | Scott Roeder has confessed to the shooting of a Kansas abortion provider. The 51-year-old Kansas City man told The Associated Press in a telephone call from jail Monday that he plans to use the so-called necessity defense at his trial. Roeder contends the killing of George Tiller in May at a Wichita church was justified to protect the lives of unborn children. His confession comes as abortion opponents across the nation release a new “Defensive Action Statement” arguing for the same force to protect the unborn as is justified to protect born children. The 21 signers want jurors...

LOS ANGELES — “Law & Order,” the long-running NBC series about crime and punishment, rarely shies away from inflammatory topics, and Friday night it takes on one of the most contentious — abortion — for just the third time in the program’s 20 seasons. In the show’s customary ripped-from-the-headlines style, the new episode focuses on the murder, in a church, of a doctor who performs late-term abortions. Though the episode, which will be broadcast at 8 p.m. Eastern and Pacific time, begins with the disclaimer that the story “is fictional and does not depict any actual person or event,” its...

On October 17, the National Abortion Federation held a "Remembering Dr. Tiller" event at the Westin Hotel in Denver, with 200 abortionists from around the world attending. I simply can't imagine being in a room full of abortionists. Their hands, yuck. What did they talk about? The suspect in the killing of abortion provider George Tiller is in talks with a prominent attorney who represents anti-abortion protesters and has long advocated justifiable homicide as a legal defense in such cases. Scott Roeder, 51, has pleaded not guilty to first-degree murder and aggravated assault charges in the May 31 shooting death of Tiller in the foyer of his Wichita church. The Kansas City, Mo., man has refused to discuss his case, but he has told The Associated Press that Tiller's killing was justified to save "the lives of unborn children." ...But Hirsh discounted the suggestion that if...

The Associated Press covered the killing of abortionist George Tiller expansively while ironically implying that such violence is commonplace. For instance, they wrote, “But the doctor’s violent death was the latest in a string of shootings and bombings over two decades directed against abortion clinics doctors and staff.”Is this accurate?  The author of a blog called “Political Math” decided to check.  Political Math uses youtube videos and graphs to demonstrate statistical points about everything from President Obama’s expansion of the national debt, to the number of jobs lost after the stimulus package was enacted. MANY PEOPLE in the field of genetics are mourning the murder of Dr. George Tiller as the loss of a personal friend. I'm one of them. I first met George in 1987 at a conference of the National Society of Genetic Counselors, where I was executive director for 18 years until 2005. He and his incredibly loyal staff - whom he treated with great generosity - had developed a procedure that provided excellent medical care but also respect and emotional support to the women who came to him for help.

When an abortion provider in Wichita, Kans., was murdered, the predictable chorus pointed fingers at Fox News's Bill O'Reilly. After all, O'Reilly had said that George Tiller was a "baby killer" and had railed against the doctor's late-term abortion practice for years. He must be to blame! No one bothered to ask whether Tiller's accused murderer had ever watched O'Reilly, or to ponder whether a militant pro-life extremist really needed a talk-show host to tell him anything he didn't already know about one of the less than a dozen doctors in the country who still performed third-trimester abortions

Thousands of Late-Term Abortions Will Continue Following Death of George Tiller Washington, DC -- The killing of late-term abortion practitioner George Tiller has focused the nation's attention on abortion, but it hasn't shown the spotlight on the number of late-term abortions done every year. Even after Tiller's death, which pro-life groups have thoroughly condemned, late-term abortions will continue. According to the Centers for Disease control, 1.3 percent of all abortions -- nearly 9,000 a year -- are done after 21 weeks into the pregnancy. That's 8,482 babies who, in 2005 alone, could have potentially survived outside their mother's womb, according...

The problem is that the American community agrees with the Supreme Court of the United States. The general American public agrees that abortion should be legal. One could certainly pluck comments from Beliefnet's boards to prove that we harbor either right wing or left wing extremists. But it's worth perusing the message boards of FreeRepublic, a conservative community, to gauge the general mood of the most hardcore conservatives. In a commentary today, Creighton theologian R.R. Reno parses the justifications for killing an abortion doctor like George Tiller, and finds that alleged murderer Scott Roeder came up short–though barely. Reno says that “The blanket condemnation [by Catholics bishops] of ‘violence’ seems unhelpfully expansive” and so he wants to explain that the reasons Tiller’s killer was wrong “are not as simple as they seem.” Reno says that under Christian thinking, such an action would have to satisfy three conditions: It would target the guilty, not the innocent; it would have to be necessary (principally to protect others); and it would...

He was one of a handful of doctors in the U.S. who performed late-term abortions and for decades had been a target of virulent criticism from antiabortion activists. A headline you will not read in the mainstream media is "Dr. Death Meets Death" – however, that describes the end of Dr. George Tiller's life precisely. His murder is tragic in a number of ways, beginning with a life created by God that was misspent on the destruction of life. The blood on his hands cried out for justice that could only lawfully be applied through civil authorities and only mitigated eternally through Another's blood shed for his sins. Neither of those was accomplished for Tiller. The first element of this tragedy is that unlike serial killers who "unlawfully"...

Ezra Klein has a superb piece at his Washington Post blog today about the very real dangers of not seeing the murder of Dr. George Tiller for what it is: a political act intended to shut down access to abortion. Klein believes it’s essential for Congress to respond to this atrocity with legislation that protects women who seek abortions and the doctors and other health care professionals who provide them: There is an impulse to understand George Tiller’s murder as a horrific, but comfortingly aberrational, act of extremist violence. "I know that he believed in justifiable homicide," said Regina Dinwiddie, a Kansas City anti-abortion activist who made headlines in 1995 when she was ordered by a federal judge to stop using a bullhorn within 500 feet of any abortion clinic. "I know he very strongly believed that abortion was murder and that you...

"..Dr. Tiller’s murder is an enormous loss for our movement and for women and their families across America. He provided abortions to women late in their pregnancy and under some of the most difficult medical circumstances. Dr. Tiller had been harassed by abortion opponents for much of his career – his clinic was burned down, he was shot in both arms by an abortion protestor, and he was recently targeted for investigation by Phill Kline in Kansas, with a jury acquittal coming just a few months ago. None of this stopped George Tiller from his commitment to providing women and...

About 10 anti-abortion protesters gathered across the street from a downtown Wichita vigil where supporters of George Tiller remembered the slain abortion provider. The protesters outside Sunday's vigil were from Westboro Baptist Church in Topeka, which also pickets military funerals. The protesters held signs emblazoned with such messages as "Abortion is bloody murder" and "Baby killer in hell." The protesters and about 20 Tiller supporters shouted at each other. A large number of police officers stood by to make sure the scene stayed under control.

The Fox News star had compared Tiller to a Nazi, called him a "baby killer," and warned of "Judgment Day" | When his show airs tomorrow, Bill O'Reilly will most certainly decry the death of Kansas doctor George Tiller, who was killed Sunday while attending church services with his wife. Tiller, O'Reilly will say, was a man who was guilty of barbaric acts, but a civilized society does not resort to lawless murder, even against its worst members. And O'Reilly, we can assume, will genuinely mean this. But there's no other person who bears as much responsibility for the characterization...

“A politically active Kansas doctor who performed late-term abortions, George Tiller, was shot and killed Sunday morning outside a church he attended in Wichita, according to local news reports.” According to Bill O’Reilly, former Kansas Governor Kathleen Sebelius, now Obama’s Secretary for Health and Human Services (HHS) “supported late term abortions by vetoing a bill that would have forced late term abortionist Dr. George Tiller (who has killed thousands of late term fetuses) to provide a specific medical reason for destroying a viable fetus.” O’Reilly has uncovered a list of monies that Dr. Tiller gave to Obama’s new Health and...
