Depending on the version, the song may be sung from the perspective of a woman or a man.

I only knew of the 'man's version', first heard in '62 on my transistor radio by The Animals.

20 years ago Eric Burden partnered up with Robby Kreiger from The Doors and toured around doing both Doors and Animals and even War songs. Saw them perform at a bar from about 5 feet away. FUN!
