Report from Meeting of Advisory Committee on Uranium

From the meet on October 21 of the Advisory Committe on Uranium a report was sent to FDR that stated that "If the chain reaction could be controlled so as to proceed gradually, it might conceivably be used as a continuous source of power in submarines thus avoiding the use of large batteries for underwater power."

Additionally it went on to say, "If the reaction turn out to be explosive in character, it would provide a possible source of bombs with a destructiveness vastly greater than anything now known."

From this the committee recommended that they receive support to allow them to investigate this. The advised that the government should provide four tons of pure graphite that would allow Fermi and Szilard to measure the capture cross section of carbon and later if justified they would need fifty tons of uranium oxide.
