BusinessWeek ^ | Damien Joseph

Posted on 11/03/2009 9:01:16 AM PST by DemforBush

Considering how many new cars are rolled out every year, it's no surprise that a few might be just plain homely. There's a chance that certain styles might become fashionable with a dash of retro hip. (Well, maybe not from the 1970s.) But for the most part, the following 50 cars will never be anything but design duds...

I graduated in 1981. One of my friends family owned this car. They were all about 5’ 5”, 200+ pounds. We called it the Weeble Mobile.

Ferrari made the Enzo look dreadful, and now the new 458 is going to come close.

The 360 and 430 are some of Ferrari’s best work in decades.

The writer is full of crap. Most of the cars are, at worst, ordinary. Many are downright cute. One or two are actually beautiful. (The ENZO is an ugly car?)

Just about any car from France is ugly.

There’s no time machine. No Mr. Fusion. No flux capacitor.

I agree with most of his picks, but the Bricklin, Volvo 240, Delorean, Plymouth Prowler, VW New Beetle, and the PT Cruiser in my humble opinion should never have made the list. The Pinto in it’s day wasn’t a bad looking car either.

While we're on the subject, I think that John Lithgow would have been a hoot as "Doc". He was the original choice for the part.

almost every new vehicle is butt ugly these days- gone are the days of stylish cool looking vehicles- GTO, Road-Runners, AC Cobra, Galaxy 500, Thunderbirds etc- they all had awesome styling- now practically every new car all looks like other brands- Aerodynamics really killed the stylisness of the oldies but goodies

ARE YOU KIDDING ME?
The DeLorean made the list of the top 50 ugly cars? This is perhaps one of the sweetest autos in the last ... well ... 50 years!!!

Shhhheeeeeeeeesh!

I totally agree with you. Even after all these years, it still looks fantastic to me.

It's got a distinctive appearance and I wouldn't call it ugly - but I did once have the misfortune of driving one. What a disappointment.

I think the author/critic is an idiot. MOST of the cars are not ugly. Furthermore, he included some that are classics of design (eg the DeLorean).

Wasn’t that designed by the Italian genius Giugiaro? If not, it shows the influence of his work.
