My friend is a certified elementary teacher. Teachers are getting paid $125-150/session (which is an hour) to teach classes at the library on weekends like arts&crafts. They move around to different libraries. In return, you know the teachers help the library out when the vote to cut their budget comes...
This job could be filled by a library worker, a college student as an intern, or by offering a lot less $25-50/hr.
Additionally the library renting dvds helped take care of blockbuster.
At what point do we cut the budget of the sacred library?
Don't fall for it. Every time there is pressure to cut costs, liberals threaten to cut the most visible and essential of services (fire dept, paramedics etc .. even local libraries). There is a lot of bureaucratic waste out there that they could easily cut but won't.
Around here the public libraries seem to exist because they give away what Blockbuster wants to charge for and, Oh Yeah, they have taxing authority.
That sounds pretty sad.

Seriously, why should the tax funded library system start providing electronic books?
Why, after Kindle stepped on its member right out of the chute by erasing , OF ALL books, 1984, do we want our tax dollars to contribute to that sort of well 1984 control?
I only have a cursory familiarity with Kindle. I would imagine this does raise many questions as to how (or even if) a library will be involved with this particular service. In away, it may be like the post office and the internet. Has the library associations been involve with
developing electronic book technology? I really don’t know.
Public libraries help ensure that there is no excuse for individual ignorance. Ignorance becomes wilful, and its fruit fully deserved.
That said, their *core* mandate is not very expensive to fulfill, and it is the slate of extraneous activities behind budget problems (not all - many additional activities incur no cost, as the material is donated and/or time is volunteered).
In some cities, library budgets are shockingly low, most of the people keeping the libraries running are volunteers, much of each collection is sourced from donations of books and money, much of the computer hardware (and maintenance) is donated, etc. It varies substantially from municipality to municipality (which is how it should be, instead of national or state centralization).
I have witnessed the skimming-type behavior you cite, and it also pisses me off.
A couple of points about the library:
Check it out, you will find that the majority of their books are slandering to christianity, vile, and glorify liberal points of view.
Very little material useful for education is available.
The librarians are usually liberal types who disdain anything else.
Politicians always cut funding first on ‘sacred’ programs so they can spin the issue.
