Mattel Tommy Burst TV commercial 1960s!

Rare early 60s tv commercial for Mattel's Tommy Burst submachine gun detective set. Load in some fresh caps, pull the bolt back, and it made a God-awful noise as it produced a small cloud of smoke around the barrel tip. It was fantastic!! Guaranteed to take your friends & relatives down, one at a time.

A few weeks ago I was in a neat hardware store. They sell all kinds of ‘yesteryear’ stuff. Old remedies, soaps, tools.
Fascinating store.
Black Mountain Hardware in Black Mountain, NC. near Asheville.

Actually have cowboy cap gun sets! And caps.

One Christmas I got a Johnny Eagle "Magumba" safari rifle (looked a lot like a scoped Winchester Model 70) and matching pistol. They flung spring-loaded plastic bullets about 30 feet.

Two Christmases later I got a scoped bolt action .22 LR and put the toys away for good.

$51.07 in 2009 dollars.

That's about the price of a video game a few years back when my kids were still at home...the kids in the 60s probably got a lot more play hours out of the gun (even after they broke it and ran out of caps) than they get nowadays out of a game that runs out of levels or whatever they do. They get bored more easily these days and don't use their imagination as much I would think.

My 9 yr old just complained about the unfairness of this :-)

He should be given the same opportunities.

I had a Fanner .50. Took it to Knott’s Berry Farm in 1959 and shot the train robber with it.

I’m 50 and a GIRL, and I’d love to have one of those.

Used to love to take several rolls of caps and smash them between to rocks. That was fun!!!

Used to love to take several rolls of caps and smash them between to rocks.

There was no end to the invention of new ways to make caps go off. It was a blast!

Back in the VietNam War Mattel used to make stocks for the M16.

If it’s Mattel, it’s swell!

the envy of every boy in the mid 1950s.

And even some girls :)...I got a gun and holster set the same Christmas that I got my Chatty Cathy doll. I was in heaven!

Today think of all the law suits for all the damaged eyes. I had the western style revolver that shot plastic spring propelled bullets.

In the late 60’s or early 70’s I had a Lone Ranger set that came with two holsters and guns - it also came with the mask. I can still remember how that mask smelled. My brother and I ran around the barn “shootin” it out - must have burned through hundreds of rolls of caps.

LEO’s would be mowing kid’s down in the street if they were playing with something like that today.

And then go into the back yard to shoot the dog, too!
