After-sale warranty firm says 17% of Apple's laptops fail within three years

Apple's line of laptops ranked fourth in a multi-year reliability survey of nine notebook makers, according to a study of 30,000 portable computers published today by a company that provides after-sale warranties.

SquareTrade, which broke out the warranty claims of its customers by manufacturers, said that Apple took the No. 4 spot, behind ASUS, Toshiba and Sony, which held No. 1 through No. 3, respectively.

“Fear, Uncertainty, Doubt.” It is a public relations ploy that apparently is only ever aimed at Apple products.

I can’t speak for their laptops, but I’ve built 3 home desktop systems with ASUS motherboards, and they’ve always been flawless.

I bought my son an Ibook G4 for a high school graduation present.

He took it to college for 3 years then came home and had already received a free HP that was newer, faster etc. from a scholarship.

He handed me the ibook and said "thanks dad, it was cool while it wasnt so slow"

I took it, added memory and am surfing the shit out of it on the net.

I love it for what I do. I occasionally have to reboot but usually only when an update of some sort locks me up.

I certainly believe Apple makes quality products. This one is 7 years old and humming along fine.

I love my ASUS netbook (EEE 901)... right now it's my only computer, and it's taken all of the use and abuse that I've given it in the last fifteen months.

(Linux only... I'm done with that company from Redmond)

I see. My concerns have always been $$$ and the OS. I have work stuff that has to have Windoze XP. Parallels fixed me up fine. In fact, I bought my first Mac because I can’t use Vista for said applications, and getting a Mac with parallels was the only solution. Huh.

My HP is 4 years old and it’s been completely trouble free. And, I’ve been on the road with it for at least 100 business trips.

SOny’s used to have a bad rep for reliability, good to see them having moved up. I am glad that ASUS has a high rating, because that really makes them a fantastic value! I have an old Toshiba laptop that I keep working, its been beat to cr*p, but it still keeps going. My next laptop, I will definately check out ASUS.

My Apple laptop was made in 1926, and it still runs perfectly, though it’s a little slower than the current ones.

Ah, yes. The good old days. I remember having a problem though: I used to drip wax on the keyboard from the candles I used to see the monitor....

For some folks, Apple is not a computer. Or a digital media player. Or a mobile telephone.

For some folks, Apple is a lifestyle and a personal identity.

I laugh at such folks.

I wasn’t surprised about HP laptops either. I’ve owned them myself and I fix laptops too, and HP laptops don’t last long as a rule. HP has never figured out how to properly cool their laptops so they basically just melt down sooner or later.

Just be sure to buy a Dell business-class machine with a 3-yr warranty rather than their 1-yr warranty consumer class machines.

Thanks for the info.
I’m ready to replace my dying Dell Inspiron and was looking at HPs.
Maybe I need to look further.

This here Toshiba laptop was purchased in 2003.

I have never had a major crash.

I have never had to reload any system software.

Original battery.

I’ll buy another, when the time comes.

I bought one of the last Powerbooks. It is still going strong. I updated for the better specs and impending doom of PowerPC support. It was and is still in mostly good shape. The keyboard is a little worse for wear after using it to inform so many on FR. ;)

I find it hard to really make a judgment call on laptops failing. Things that are made to be portable often have bad things happen to them that aren’t the fault of the manufacturer.

And the title is amusing.
