“the founding stories and doctrines of Mormonism appear to the outsider as a bizarre phantasmagoria of fevered religious imagination not untouched by perverse genius.”

Well the author nailed by impression; other than the genius part.

Mark Twain was more accurate as well as funnier.

As to the question...

I would say an offshoot of Christianity. Christian-ish. You don't write a new book, hold it in the same or more reverence as the old books, and try to claim you are the exact same thing as before the book was written and followed. New revelation and scripture = new religion, in my estimation.

Another Religion Some have suggested that the LDS is a Christian derivative much as Christianity is a Jewish derivative, but that is surely wrong. The claim of Christianity is that its gospel of Jesus Christ is in thorough continuity with the Old Testament and historic Israel, that the Church is the New Israel, which means that it is the fulfillment of the promise that Israel would be "a light to the nations."

Smacks of Anti-semitism.

Never forget that Jesus was, is and will always be a Jew.

Those who hate Jews, hate Jesus also know as Yah'shua.

YHvH who is our salvation.

The correct view was given to us by Paul.
We who call ourselves followers of the Christ
have been grafted into the family of Abraham.

Romans 11 would be a good place to start.

They back up with carefully detailed research their “conservative” estimate that LDS assets are in the rage of $25–30 billion.
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

Actually, I thought the Mormon assets would be far greater. If it is true that the LDS assets are a mere $25 to 30 billion, then I am NOT impressed!

Let's put this in perspective.

Harvard has an endowment of $35 billion. Harvard's assets would be much, much greater than the Mormon church if the buildings and all other property of Harvard were included in its total assets. This is merely **one** of our nation's universities.

There are a number of universities ( private and government) with endowments in the multi-billions and if their total property were counted, I would expect that the assets of many **individual** universities exceed the assets of the Mormon church.

This sounds more and more like the question among muslims of which muslim sect really follows Mohammed. The focus in this country needs to be reestablishing and maintaining the constitution and the republic without which you will not have the freedom to debate which denomination is more pious, more Christian or who are true believers.
