Update for Microsoft XML Core Services 4.0 Service Pack 2 (KB973688)

Size: 5.4 MB

Install this update to prevent applications from sending too many HTTP requests while a well-known Document Type Definition (DTD) is included. After you install this item, you may have to restart your computer. Once you have installed this item, it cannot be removed.

Is this ok to install? I have never seen an update which says "Once you have installed this item, it cannot be removed."

From Microsoft, an explanation why it is needed:

When an application uses MSXML to process XHTML, redundant retrieval requests for well-known DTD files from the W3C Web server cause XHTML parsing to fail on a Windows-based computer

So if you don’t mind this potential problem, then don’t install it.

I am sure it is, haven’t read anything out there to say otherwise. Now I am sure you will still be able to read xml documents if you don’t install it.

Once you have installed this item, it cannot be removed.

I seem to remember this line scrolling across the bottom of my TV screen during Obama's inauguration.

Actually, a LOT of MS patches can’t be uninstalled without uninstalling subordinate patches or screwing up a COM descriptor or corrupting a DLL.

I installed the patch you mentioned on my machines, and they’re running fine. It sounds like a patch to help prevent DOS attacks on sites with valid DTDs.

It seems to be related to another update included in the bundle, which is the one I've highlighted below. However **this one** doesn't say it cannot ever be removed and it's 1.5MB in size, so it's obviously different but similar to the one which is primary to the discussion.

I think I installed it yesterday, since I have auto update.

Is it to prevent your computer from being used as part of a botnet or something?

There is a solution to all your windows problems: Ubuntu Linux

There's a learning curve, but Ubuntu is pretty awesome. If I could get my windoze games to run under Linux, I'd dump M$ windoze for good.

Or, alternately, you could get a Mac and run all three...

“There is a solution to all your windows problems: Ubuntu Linux”

I have tried dozens of times to install linux on a laptop. I can get it to run on thumb drives, cd’s and dvd’s, and in a partition. I cannot get it to run as the primary with one partition to save my life. It would not boot. I have spent hours pouring over websites giving instructions on how to make it work.

Maybe I’ll give it a try again soon. It’s been about a year since I last tried it.

“Once you have installed this item, it cannot be removed.”

This is not uncommon with MS patches.
