The Energy and Climate Change Secretary says politicians face a "huge challenge" to convince people that action on global warming should be a priority, ahead of crunch UN talks in Copenhagen. Ed Miliband said voters needed persuading that action would be good for the economy and be fair to vulnerable people, admitting: "There is a mountain to climb on this, globally and nationally." But he said there was "as close to a scientific consensus as possible" that global warming is happening and is man-made. Ahead of the fortnight of negotiations, which will culminate in a summit attended by dozens of...

A Florida manatee whose exciting yet perilous voyage to the frigid waters of the Northeast that amazed spectators along the Eastern Seaboard is recuperating at the Miami Seaquarium from injuries related to cold stress he suffered from his two-week stay near a Linden, N.J., oil refinery. The rescue, which took nearly eight hours and the help of 30 people, entailed using a large net and Conoco-Phillips johnboats. Rescuers failed capturing it three times, but the fourth time was the charm. Once they got the 1,100-pound, 10-foot-long manatee onto the muddy creek bank, a truck transferred Ilya to an indoor heated...

Progressive creationist anthropology: many reasons NOT to believe A review of Who was Adam? by Fazale Rana with Hugh Ross Although mostly written by Fazale Rana, the book is said to equally represent the work of Hugh Ross. Their salvos against biblical creationists are mostly confined to the earlier chapters of the book, with the first shot being to blame us for the biblical perspective on human origins not being at the high table of scientific debate (p. 12). Here they characterize the approach taken by creationists as largely attacking human evolutionary models, but seldom offering a viable theory of...

The next Solar Storm is predicted to start Fall of 2006 and reach it's massive peak 2012. According to the National Center for Atmospheric Research, this could slow satellite orbits, cause satellite failures, disrupt communications and navigation, wipe out computer memories, bring down power systems, disrupt electric grids, cause blackouts, throwing millions of people into darkness. A previous storm in 1989 caused a nine hour blackout in Quebec after several power grids collapsed. It can create more dangerous conditions for our astronauts, and force airplanes to take alternate routes to avoid the poles. A storm of that magnitude could short-circuit...
