Brazil's president said Thursday that "gringos" should pay Amazon nations to prevent deforestation, insisting rich Western nations have caused much more past environmental destruction than the loggers and farmers who cut and burn trees in the world's largest tropical rain forest.
President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva made the comments just before an Amazon summit in which delegates signed a declaration calling for financial help from the industrial world to halt the deforestation that causes global warming.
"I don't want any gringo asking us to let an Amazon resident die of hunger under a tree," Silva said. "We want to preserve, but they will have to pay the price for this preservation because we never destroyed our forest like they mowed theirs down a century ago."

And some people on FR think Brazil is a friend of America.
Oh and North America has more trees now than it did a century ago.

I have to agree with Lula. He makes a valid point about Brazil's ability to feed its people being crippled by do-gooder environazis who want to prevent deforestation.
Those environazis, if they are really serious about saving the rainforest, should indeed put up or shut up.

so... is he basically saying that the preservation of the Amazon forest depends on us(GRINGOS) paying up for them to preserve it? sounds like self-inflicted blackmail on their part.

From what I’ve read, the thousand mile wide band of trees around the arctic is a far more important source of oxygen.

That dipshit probably doesn’t even know where the term “gringo” came from. I know that my ex-Mother-in-Law, the upper class Mexican “Lady” was shocked when I told her.

America is a young, ‘developing nation’ too, so we deserve payments from Norway also for our efforts at ending ‘deforestation’ - dibs on the first billion....

First the Saudi’s want us to put money away to feed them when their oil runs out, now Brazil wants us to pay them not to cut their tree’s.
