Tuesday, December 01, 2009 12:19 PM by MSRCTEAM Reports of Issues with November Security Updates
Weve received questions about public reports that customers might be experiencing system issues with the November Security Updates (which some are referring to Black Screen issues). Weve investigated these reports and found that our November Security Updates are not making changes to the system that these reports say are responsible for these issues.
While these reports werent brought to us directly, from our research into them, it appears theyre saying that our security updates are making permission changes in the registry to the value for the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\Shell key.
Weve conducted a comprehensive review of the November Security Updates, the Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool, and the non-security updates we released through Windows Update in November. That investigation has shown that none of these updates make any changes to the permissions in the registry. Thus, we dont believe the updates are related to the black screen behavior described in these reports.
Weve also checked with our worldwide Customer Service and Support organization, and theyve told us theyre not seeing black screen behavior as a broad customer issue. Because these reports were not brought to us directly, its impossible to know conclusively what might be causing a black screen in those limited instances where customers have seen it. However, we do know that black screen behavior is associated with some malware families such as Daonol.
This underscores the importance of our guidance to customers to contact our Customer Service and Support group any time they think theyre affected by malware or are experiencing issues with security updates. This enables us to determine what might be happening and take steps to help customers by documenting new malware families in our MMPC malware encyclopedia or documenting known issues in our security bulletins and the supporting Knowledge Base articles.
I hope this helps to clarify,
Christopher

It’s not a bug its a system feature.
Interesting Microsoft reply to Black Screen of Death
It happened to me this morning. Windows restarted itself and it has not happened again.
Windows 7?
Vista

Yeah, after all Microsoft's track record is SO good. LOL < /sarcasm>
The sheeple will continue to buy their crap.
It’s Bush’s fault.
I’ve had no problems with automatic updates in either Vista or Windows 7. I am using McAfee internet suite on both computers.
Haven’t seen this one myself, and our campus has 15,000 active users. Strikes me that the Prevx CEO has just gotten a ton of free publicity. Call me cynical.
Well, I was going to ask what ‘FUD’ means so I could understand your point but something tells me I may not want to know too much about that acronym. Please give me an idea though, what you meant. I am having odd system behavior today, no desktop icons on Win 7, and am wondering what to pursue. Thanks.
FUD=Fear, uncertainty and doubt.
For your no icon issue, do you also not have any programs listed in All Programs?
Two things to try...1. Right click on the start button and select properties. The n make a change, click apply, then undo it and click apply again, then OK. Icons back? 2. Reboot.
It will be corrected in the next patch Tuesday from MS.
Ya know, and that’s the problem. They haven’t been so good, and they’ve paid for it. Now, they come out with a great OS, and we make stuff up. Kinda reminds me of the way Republicans in Congress are treated. ;)
Worldwide, Prevx is the only one to report this and, at that, they didn’t even report it to Microsoft. Makes one go hmmm...
Thank you for addressing my FUD!
I did try both suggestions (bowing low in your presence) and they didn’t work. The machine is slowing down with each reboot and while there were initially programs listed in the start menu (recently used) before one clicks on the ‘all programs’ bar - that has been reset. I have also been having problems with Outlook too. Thanks for the heads up that relief is due from MS on Tuesday. For now, I am grateful to have a little Dell Mini running XP to turn to for comfort - and fellow freepers like you, PapaSmurf! Have I mentioned how grateful I am for your asssistance yet? : )
I don’t let Microsoft do auto updates since they trashed my internet connectivity a few years ago with one of their improvements to XP. I let them autodownload, wait a few weeks, and then install them if there haven’t been any reported problems.
After reading this thread, I think I’ll give November’s updates a pass.
My favorite cousin just lost a computer (running XP) due to an automatic MS update. Totally trashed the computer so it won’t boot.
Wife’s entire organization just upgraded from XP and has had nothing but headaches. MS Outlook keeps freezing up for my wife causing her to have to reboot over and over again, and her “cell mate” continually has MS Word freezing up and having to reboot it.
More MS garbage.
