About 12,000 Daimler workers protest possible move of C-Class production to Alabama

SINDELFINGEN, Germany — Thousands of workers at carmaker Daimler AG's Sinelfingen plant in southern Germany protested for a second day Tuesday against possible plans to move some production of the Mercedes C-Class line of cars to a plant in Tuscaloosa, Alabama.

A decision on the matter, which threatens about 3,000 jobs in Germany, could come later in the day.

"We will not let our jobs vanish to Nirvana without a fight," Erich Klemm, the workers' council president told about 12,000 protesters.

Daimler, based in Stuttgart, is considering the move to take advantage of lower production costs in the U.S. and to avoid currency fluctuations. Klemm said the C-Class line was of central importance to Sindelfingen, the company's biggest car production facility in Germany. If the move takes place, production could start in Alabama in 2014.

While most of the articles I've seen comment on the currency valuation between the dollar and the euro, the biggest reason is labor. All of the Diamler AG plants in Germany are unionized, while Alabama is a right-to-work state.

I don’t understand - how do you protest a person doing something with their own property? Protest what? My factory, my decision, and you can just go work the lederhosen, Franz.

When Industrialized Nations move their factories here because production costs are cheaper, thus putting their OWN workers out of employment, does that mean WE are now officially a THIRD WORLD NATION?

Tuscaloosa is Nirvana? Never been there, but that’s mighty high praise.

I’m sure BO will step in to prevent the loss of these jobs.

Ahhh....they’ve been making C-Class Mercedes in many different countries including South Africa and Brazil, and they had been making them in Mexico until the complaints got too strong as I understand it.

Yes. In fact the Obama Squad will be arriving at your home shortly to pull out your electricity and running water. Then, as part of HealthCareReform™, you'll be given a horrible disease... malaria perhaps, or ebola.

It must be humiliating to all those urbane, sophisticated, nuanced fully entitled europeans to learn that they can be replaced by a bunch of backwoods American redneck ruffians. Tuscaloosa. I love it.

I drove by this plant Monday. It is stunning ans sparkling silver in the bright sun. The lots adjacent to the amazingly clean and architecturally beautiful buildings are a stark contrast to the ruin of Flint and Detroit.

My thought was having read about the Peterbilt Tennessee closure.....this is coming to Chattanooga with the new VW Plant.

The old order is dead

By the way, I drive a Dodge Sprinter, Made by Mercedes in Germany but tweaked in a Mercedes plant in South Carolina...... there might be a lot more movement in the future now that the Crysler albatross is gone.

I went to college in Tuscaloosa. It’s not bad, but it’s not Nirvana.

As a Tuscaloosa native, and current resident, I’m just crying in my beer about those German union workers that probably hate America anyway.

Besides, my son works at Mercedes.

A few weeks ago, Ford announced that it was moving its production line for the Kuga, a crossover SUV currently sold exclusively in Europe, to its production plant in Louisville, Kentucky.
