(AP) – 1 day ago

OXFORD, Pa. — Obese students at a historically black college near Philadelphia won't have to take a fitness class to graduate after all.

Lincoln University faculty nixed the idea this week amid complaints the so-called "fat course" undermined a school principle of equal treatment.

The school had initiated the policy to address high rates of obesity and diabetes, especially in the African-American community.

The Amish are more apt to eat starchy foods and sweets.

Obese students at a historically black college near Philadelphia won't have to take a fitness class to graduate after all.

A college is a voluntary school that is designed to impart knowledge - not a fat camp. The students pay money to take classes that are designed to help them earn a living and pursue a career. Forcing a student who is studing Medicine, Engineering, Programming, Physics, Chemistry or a host of other disciplines, to take a foreign language, physical fitness or a Dance class is nothing but extortion. Either pay the money, or you don't get your diploma.

Then we have the economic advantage, where the students are telling the college - either deliver our diplomas on our terms, or we will take our credits and our cash and graduate elsewhere. This is a benefit that a student at a private college has; that does not exist at a state university. The state college doesn't NEED the student's tuition, as they can be sustained by the taxpayer. Either way, the colleges are using extortion as a means to support educational programs that are not fiscally responsible.

Why do you go to college, to learn or to get in shape?

The physical condition of the students who graduate from college is of no concern to the college - this is the responsbility of the student. The purpose of the college is to teach the student; not to make them run laps.

Used to be true. But I have noticed with increasing frequency that black colleges are becoming nothing more than High School Plus.

I also wonder, by what standard they were dictating these students were “obese”? Many are obviously chubby, but if they were going only by BMI, they were wrong.

My 16 y/o son is 5’5” and 155 lbs. That gives him a BMI of 25.8 and puts him in the “overweight” category.

He also has 6.8% body fat and is cut and ripped all over. If he manages to put on another 16 pounds of muscle (and he’s recently put on 10, so it’s possible) he will officially be “obese”.

The weird part is that we’re fighting to get his BF over 8%, but he can’t seem to break 7%. (Ice cream, peanut butter, lots of fatty carbs) The dr says that it’s too low to sustain him in a healthy way at 6.8%.

Now his 16 year old EGO... that’s definitely obese...
