Did anyone see a meteor(ite) come through the atmosphere about 5 minutes ago?

Posted on 12/09/2009 6:29:08 PM PST by publius321

I was watching a movie several minutes ago (in West Palm Beach, FL) and saw out my window (facing east)a large shining object quickly plunge from the sky. It freaked me out a bit. Did anyone out there see it?

I saw one similar back around 1990-1992 and years later saw it on Discovery as it was captured on video.

I read that it’s supposed to “peak” this weekend but I guess we’re already getting some of it, unless the Russians are firing warning shots from a sub. Maybe the’re in the gulf.

Must have been the black hole from the Large Hadron Collider coming back to consume the earth. They saw it on the way up in Norway last night. ;^)

It'll probably take it until about December 21, 2012 to finish the job. ;^)

Around an hour or so ago I saw a flash in the sky, similar to lightening or a huge flashbulb. I’m in Southern VA. I was out in the back yard testing a new optic and caught it in my peripheral vision.

Was it space junk that burns up in the atmosphere? Fun to watch.

I sure did see it but what made this more unusual than the many showers I’ve see is that this one, at least sizeable piece of it definitely made it through the atmosphere.

Gort is shut down. Thanks to your quick thinking you’ve saved the earth and Gort is traveling on a flatbed truck to an Alabama scrap yard.

In central FL I was out a couple hours later and saw two, one was of a reasonable magnitude the other faint.

I wouldn’t get to excited about it. As an amateur astronomer I can tell you most nights if you go out and stare up at the sky long enough you will see one or two. Its just that usually we aren’t looking.

I have seen many in my lifetime but not that actually hit the Earth. This was a sizeable ball of fire that dropped down and made impact. When I say “fire” I don’t mean red/yellow/orange.

It was a big bright white flickering ball that descended straight down. After I Googled “meteor” last night I saw the picture of that strange occurrence in Norway that was said to be a failed Russian missile test. What I saw looked more like that - however - there was no spinning; it fell straight to the ground.

I actually thought it was a plane crash happening close by but there was no explosion or noise, which means it wasn’t as close to me as it appeared.

Are you telling me that such impacts happen with frequency or are you referring to the “shooting stars” that we see all of our lives that zip by and burn up in the atmosphere.
