15,000 Will Die From CT Scans Done In 1 Year Scans have higher levels of radiation than thought, researchers say

Dec. 14: According to new reports in the Archives of Internal Medicine, radiation exposure from commonly performed CT scans may contribute to thousands of future cancer cases. NBC's Robert Bazell reports.

Dec . 14, 2009 CHICAGO - Radiation from CT scans done in 2007 will cause 29,000 cancers and kill nearly 15,000 Americans, researchers said Monday.

The findings, published in the Archives of Internal Medicine, add to mounting evidence that Americans are overexposed to radiation from diagnostic tests, especially from a specialized kind of X-ray called a computed tomography, or CT, scan.

"What we learned is there is a significant amount of radiation with these CT scans, more than what we thought, and there is a significant number of cancers," said Dr. Rita Redberg, editor of the Archives of Internal Medicine, where the studies were published.

Speculation and estimation isn’t science. How do they come up with the numbers of deaths, of cancers?

Measuring radiation effects. Now that is something tough that would be difficult to discrn in this day and age.

Gotta pay for the equipment. no problems seeen until it is alll paid for.

Computed Tomography does give a much larger dose than a General Radiography exam does, the question is” are the exam results worth the radiation exposure risk?

In general, a CT is not ordered unless there is some issue where an axial slice type of exam is needed. Blocked intestines, blood in the cranium, etc. So a little radiation exposure is the least of your health concerns at the moment.

If you get one, is it really that bad? I had one in 2008.

Yes, this has my skepticism meter going off the charts. Let them publish their calculations based on higher mortality due to cancer taken from a sample that had CT scans done. I bet they do not have the data.

Thank America's skanky lawyer class for this development ... well intentioned doctors are compelled to cover their butts by demanding CT scans for procedures that don't come even close to requiring them.
Why? Their liability insurance premiums are off the scale ... thank you ‘US trial lawyers’ you lowlife scumbags. Hopefully, many trial lawyer types have had the CT scan ... diminishing their numbers would be a huge plus for America.

OK, I've had just about all I can take...

I am 52, and I took dose in 6 nuclear refuelings (each refueling, less than 5 REM) and in addition, have had a brain and heart scan, (due to high cholesterol) thank you very much. What is this person saying??? How many REMS are we talking about? 650 Rems is the magic number. Plenty of honest, hard working folks survived Chernobyl, with some astronomical exposures.
