Violent crime down in U.S., but up in Seattle
The Seattle P.I. ^ | December 21, 2009 | Chris Grygiel

Posted on 12/21/2009 5:59:29 PM PST by Stoat

Led by a spike in robberies and assaults, the violent crime rate in Seattle increased by more than 21 percent during the first part of this year compared to last.

FBI crime statistics released Monday showed there were 1,927 incidents of violent crime (murder, rape, robbery and assault) from January to June in 2009. That compares to 1,582 incidents during the same time period in 2008. Murders were down - eight during the period this year compared to 15 in 2008. There were 55 reported rapes compared to 65 last year. There were 908 reports of robbery compared to 707 last year and 956 reports of assault compared to 795 in 2008.

The property crime rate increased in Seattle, too. The number of car theft, larceny, burglary and thefts rose more than 4.4 percent during the first part of this year (16,325 incidents) compared to last year, when there were 1,5629.

Nationally the crime rate is falling, confounding experts who expected to see a spike caused by the economic downturn. Murder and manslaughter fell 10 percent for the first half of the year.

Overall, property crimes fell nationally by 6.1 percent, and violent crimes by 4.4 percent, according to the six-month data collected by the FBI. Crime rates haven't been this low since the 1960's, and are nowhere near the peak reached in the early 1990's.

Let’s see what those stats look like after a year or two of 10+ percent unemployment.

Indeed...I’ve heard it said that the ‘real’ unemployment rate at the moment is 17%

Look at the areas with the highest invasive “gun control” laws. That’s where crime is the highest.

Well, when you live in a city that promotes the banning of handguns in most public places, what do you expect? The big, strong, fast morally corrupt criminals will do whatever they want, because they know you can’t do anything about it.

(hint to them... I can. Don’t mess with me)

Thank you for the link....17% and over for the past 3 months. And yet Obama, Reid, Pelosi and Barney Frank still have jobs??

I guess this is what they meant by ‘hope and change’.

I left the Seattle area in 2002 after growing up there and I thought it was pretty bad then. Places like South Seattle has always had it’s problems, but we started noticing more and more crimes happening in places where it was previously uncommon. I had a feeling at the time that things were getting worse. Shootings nearby, muggings, an increase in drug activity, petty crimes, etc..

I remember my boyfriend’s car getting broken into in our so-called “secure” parking garage. We spoke to a freindly, familiar officer about it and mentioned our plans to move to another state. He told us it was a great idea. LOL.

It'll probably be down even further because the government will be doing the stealing for them, then handing it out buying votes...

Yes, and that is an official government statisic. Shadowstats says it's 20%.

The scenery here is gorgeous, there is lots to do and if you don’t mind rain for months the climate is nice, but the hard-Left ‘culture’, a steady coarsening of the ‘friendliness quotient’, the exploding population, high costs and the increasing crime levels have definitely made the place far less hospitable than it used to be.

“sigh”

I’ll always place in my heart for Western Washington. I have lots of great memories. Nice summers (rarely humid), water, trees, mountains, Blue Angels, the Puyallup Fair, shopping at the base (dad was military), fishing, and even the crazy windstorms. Those were some of the good things. It was sad for me to leave, but it was becoming less and less acceptable to me and my wallet. My mom/dad still live there. They have a nice home by the bay and I love visiting.

Actually, WA state has one of the first state preemption laws, one on which many other states' are modeled. And, other than pretty strict Class 3 restrictions, I'd take WA state gun laws over most states' any day. Mayor 5 pennies attempt to subvert the state constitution notwithstanding, that crime rate increase has little to do with gun laws. Believe it or not, even with the bleeding heart ninnies in Seattle, we are pretty pro gun here. Even the rather large Seattle gay community is becoming pretty pro gun, from what I read and see. My bet, is that that community in particular will shut down the latest attempt at gun control here. That being the attempt by our usual suspects in the anti gun crowd to ban "assault rifles" following the latest police killings, which, by the way were not committed with those "style" weapons.

Maybe we should trade Seattle to Canada for Alberta?
