FORT COLLINS, Colo. (AP) -- The parents who carried out the balloon boy hoax were sentenced to jail Wednesday and given strict probation conditions that forbid them from earning any money from the spectacle for four years.
Richard Heene was sentenced to 90 days in jail, including 60 days of work release that will let him pursue his job as a construction contractor while serving his time. His wife, Mayumi, was sentenced to 20 days in jail.....

Way, way over the top. This in addition to a $42,000 fine. Huge over-reaction to a dumb@ss stunt.
Gaol time + fine + probation. I wonder how much AlGore will get when they finally figure out GLOBAL WARMING IS A SCAM?
They should have gotten six months for the mother and two years for the Father. They clearly wasted big time resources that ended up being a waste of time and money. They are not going to learn anything with 20 days and 90 days...What is that????

Well, you do have the whole waste the emergency resources for a hoax deal. I hope anyone who suffered as a result of this stunt (someone who had a real emergency that couldn’t be tended to because resources were allotted to the hoax) also sues the crap out of these folks.
..I was filled with disgust that we're suppose to rejoice at the harsh sentence...(jail time is jail time!)....
..or see ..'crime doesn't pay' attitude....
...when, at this very hour, criminals in our Senate are grifting, lying, cheating, stealing the soul of this nation!!!!
They--(Baucus, Reid, Nelson, etc) are a hundred times, a thousand, a million times worse than this sad, mixed up family!

I bet 42k about covers the emergency resources’ costs (never mind the cost to others who may have truly needed them). I wouldn’t worry about it. No over-reaction IMO.

They’ll write a book and make a ton of money.
I’m good with this sentence. Very good, in fact. These people aren’t hardened criminals, just fame-seeking morons. The sentence takes away the things they most sought (celebrity and a means to profit off the stunt), and forces them to pay restitution for the public cost of their actions. The family stays together (the wife was facing deportation if convicted of a felony), and mom and dad will have the opportunity to gain a little wisdom with each and every garnisheed paycheck.

Possibly — but I doubt that the EMTs concerned could stage a realistic training exercise of a similar scope for as little as $42,000. Add a zero, perhaps.
As training goes, this was a bargain.
I dunno, maybe it’s a cultural thing. I prefer our emergency services in NZ to be well-practised and ready for anything, even for idiots doing stupid stunts at inconvenient times and places. If they can handle that, then they can handle anything. Happy to pay tax dollars for that.
