Google Buries Drunk Baucus Story
Google ^ | December 29, 2009 | me

Google has begun to spike the "suggestions" which appear via "AJAX" when you enter "Baucus" into the Google search box.

Yesterday, the first suggestion at the top of the list was "Drunk". Today, even if you type in the entire phrase "Baucus Drunk" - the suggestion is GONE.

This is that annoying feature of Google's whereby stories that reflect negatively upon Democrats disappear and/or get quickly 'modified' or hidden, while anything even slanderous against a Republican or especially Sarah Palin will zip to the top of the rankings and STAY THERE.

What the Google AJAX suggest algorith suggested yesterday.
You can try it yourself today, there is no such suggestion anymore. This algorithm is automatically generated by users... frequently searched terms rise to the top automatically. In this case, it was REMOVED for the benefit of the drunk Senator from Montana.

Google Results 1 - 10 of about 818,000 for baucus drunk. (0.09 seconds)

I think you missed my point...

I did not say that they censored all of the search results, merely that the AJAX 'suggest' feature was spiked not to show "Drunk". In my screenshot taken yesterday, you can clearly see that it appeared at the top of the list. Today it is gone.

SCREENSHOT FROM YESTERDAY:

However, regarding your point... it is interesting to note that the VERY FIRST RESULT is a lame article immediately written to defend Baucus in an obscure blog at the San Francisco Chronicle.

Baucus Coverup - 1st result on Google now

I don’t think you understand how the Google “suggestions” box works. If news outlets aren’t reporting on it in large numbers, and users aren’t searching for it in large numbers, then it falls out of use and out of the box.

Google is a very dynamic system. What happened yesterday may not happen today.

I would think that "Baucus Drunk" would still be one of the top Baucus searches, today.

Actually, I do understand that. But the term COULD NOT fall out of the suggestion box COMPLETELY in 24 hours. You cannot tell me in all seriousness that there are now more people searching for "Bush Drunk" than the current news story "Baucus Drunk".

You can test the Google Suggest AJAX for a number of terms and see for yourself. It was obvious by the growing number of hits in Google News as well... this was clearly manipulated manually to skew the results... something which is not done for Republicans.

Test it with Palin, Bush or any Republican...

Bush Drunk, Palin Drunk, almost any Republican drunk gets hits...

There is no way this could go from a top hit yesterday - one which appeared after typing just the first three letters of Baucus's name... to not even being on the list today. No way without a manual adjustment.
