That reminds me of Father Charles Waters of the 173rd Airborne in Vietnam, he was asked why he didn’t carry a weapon cause his weapon was a bible. But he also said “I guess if we get over run there will be plenty of weapons lying around to use”. Tons of people have 9mm’s so there’s a lot out there, but it would be in a lot of demand, too.

Maybe in a bolt gun, but I wouldn’t trust a .308 Win in a semi-auto chambered for the 7.62x51.

Last year I noticed that 22LR, 40 S&W and 9mm were about the only available calibers aside from the cowboy action calibers like 44 special and 45 Colt.

I couldnt get 45acp, 38 special or 357 mag hardly at all. A lot of my friends who bought the new Ruger 380 couldnt get ammo for it.

I never had much trouble getting 9mm, which was good because thats what most of my pistols are chambered for.

I was able to score exactly one box of 38 special and two boxes of 45 acp since the nov. 2008 elections.

Everyone had 40 cal.

I went to a cabelas in Wheeling WV the week before Christmas 2008. THE ONLY calibers they had besides 22 LR was a lone box of 38 special, 44 special, 45 colt and about a million boxes of 40 cal.

I dont have a 40 cal pistol, so that didnt do me much good.

Slightly OT, but how does one get into the ‘Hobby’ of reloading?

You must live somewhere besides the United States. /s

Here in Kahleephornia a box of 9mm can be had for $10 while 45 is $25+, depending who wants to gauge me on a particular day.

Meanwhile, in Idaho there is ammo everywhere and at a better price.

I use .308/7.62x.51 in a Springfield M1A consistent 3” @100, iron sights. Ammo is surplus So. African, Russian, Spanish and I think Brazil. Filthy, filthy, Filthy! But it shoots great and I am not really trying.

Saw claims of what you could do to this gun and it will still fire so I did a test myself. 4,000 rounds over the course of a year didn’t clean the gun until recently.

No jams, misfires, stovepipes, nothing.

Spent two hours cleaning the gun, it looks new now and I will never leave a gun filthy like that again. Should have taken 15 minutes but I have total confidence in the performance of my rifle.

Do a search for Dillon Precision.

They offer a DVD to teach you how to get started in reloading.

NATO 7.62 x 51mm round is same as .308 Winchester. -- "Not so"

There are headspace differences between the two rounds. The .308 go-gauge is 1.6300, the .308 no go-gauge is 1.6340. The 7.62 go-gauge is 1.6350, the 7.62 no go-gauge is 1.6405. Since NATO military ammunition can come from any NATO country, and the goal is the ability to interchange ammunition, the military chamber is larger.

Provided we use common sense, headspace differences shouldn’t cause us to quake in fear. If a person is using new, Mil-Surp ammunition; and not reloading it, then the headspace becomes a non-issue. The round is fired and expended.

Close enough.

Problem is a 38/357 or 45 colt or 9mm in a “rifle” is still a “pistol”, just with longer sight radius....

Actually, I can hand load my.357 to perform in the same ballistic envelope as the 30-30 winchester range. The .45 colt as well can perform amazingly well at a maximum 100yards range. I have another couple of rifle chamberings to really reachout and touch. Here in Michigan the black bear is the biggest threat in the wild, and shots on whitetail over 150 yards are rare.
