MRSA 'spread by patients moving between hospitals'

MRSA is mainly spread by patients moving between hospitals, Dutch researchers have said.

The authors have called for more screening of people who are repeatedly admitted to different hospitals to try to break this transmission cycle.

They said this would eventually help to eradicate MRSA.

The conclusions were drawn from a large study of the geographical location of different strains of MRSA across 26 European countries.

MRSA is a potentially lethal bug which is difficult to combat because it has developed resistance to some antibiotics.

The study was published in the journal, PloS Medicine.

Before anyone asks...

MRSA = methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus

(Staph... resistant to antibiotics...)

It’s the patients’ fault of course.

If the patient knows they are a carrier, then yes it is.

What about the TB case today? The patient had to know he had TB. The TSA and the CDC both had him on their do not travel list. He went on an airplane anyway.

I have a place on my leg that the doctor collected a sample from today. She is sending it of to be cultured, she is sure it is staph, hoping not MRSA. Recently I have spent a lot of time at the hospital and at a nursing home while caring for my mother who was ill.

As always, I appreciate the post. Just found out yesterday via culture that I still have MRSA. I had two major back surgeries in 2009 due to epidural abscesses w/ Mrsa in my spine.
This is going to kill me and I have just about given up.
Seriously. Things are not going well for Jeff. I don’t know what to do except wait for another major episode and go to Shands and admit myself.

I went in for a “big deal” heart surgery. I suffered a stroke during surgery and contracted MRSA.

What was to be a 6 to 8 day stay in the hospital, turned out to be 2 solid months of hell in that hospital. Due to the MRSA, they had to cut into my chest 3 additional times because the crap was eating me alive.

Where I should have had a small zipper scar, I was left with a gash that looks like I was hit with an axe. Of course this ruined my chances of becoming a male swimsuit model for the over 60 guys, but I am learning to cope with that.

With 24/7 morphine and oxys for pain during those 2 months, I became an addict. The took a few months to clear up my head and body... but I made it.

I certainly can’t say what caused my MRSA, but I do remember that shortly after the initial surgery, an older nurse touched my chest wound with her bear hands. I told my wife and she got the lady removed from my care.

MRSA, without a doubt... sucks.

Looks like you’re over it so I’m glad to see that part. I think I’ll avoid hospitals if I can.

Lots of folks get MRSA in hospitals, because that’s where they do surgeries, but MRSA is everywhere. It’s likely on your skin right now. It’s when it gets into the body that it really kicks rear.

In 1958, when I was 10, I came down with what we now call Swine Flu. Lots of folks died during that go around. I was given penicillin and it turned out that I was severely allergic to it. It is believed that a dirty needed gave me a type of Staph infection that they had no cure for. I suspect it was MRSA or a form of it.

I was in the hospital for a year. Over 70% of my body is scar tissue because of all of the surgery and skin grafts. At one point they were ready to amputate my left arm, but the fever of 108*, that I had suffered for 3 days, finally broke. Yes, I know, I should be dead or crazy... LOL

During this last go around the docs suggested that the MRSA that had tried to kill me this time, had been dormant in my body for all of these years and that my body refused to cooperate with surgery.

In any case, while it is nasty stuff, you can beat it... I did—twice.

Yikes, another horror story. Glad you’re okay now.

I’ve read that we carry all sorts of nasty microbes on our skin or in our mucous membranes. Infection is a matter of becoming susceptible to them.

I have to ask, do you take vitamin D and vitamin C? To boost the immune system, that is.

You’ve investigated tea tree oil or oil of oregano or whatever other natural products are claimed to help?

Yes, but that won’t stop the 0bammunists from punishing the innocent traveling public, just as they do regarding terrorism.

I suppose the attitude of the flying public would depend on if this guy was in the seat next to them. Then, they would be all for many “unreasonable” constraints.
