So, this is a follow up. To Recap, I had been having problems with Firefox freezing up on me, and the problem seemed to get worse with each new update. I tried several things, didn't work. I tried Apples browser, was nice in some wais, but had a pretty lame viddo player and no easy way to change it. I tried Opera, which was more robust in many ways, and allowed for a relatively easy substitution of WMP, for the default one, but had other features that weren't as good as Firefoxes, one being the rigid bookmarks A to Z display.
Well, about 3 or 4 days ago, I tried a suggestion made by one or more posters to the last thread, that the problems I was having, may have been caused by Add-Ins that were not worjkking well wwith thhe newer versions of FF. I wasn't really al,l thathopeful that it would make a difference, but with having to shut down FF in Task Manager *first* before I could start it up again, every time I wanted to surf, I was willing to try anyting. So I disabled all my Add-ins except one, that i've been using "forever", and sat back to see what impact it had.
To my delighted and gratful surprise, it's been several days of surfing, without a single freeze-up!
Eventually, I shall probably add back the Add-ins I disabled, one by one, til I find the culprit, but right now, I'm just happy to have FireFox working like the Firefox I've grown to love!

Even if you weren't, you might try a reload of Firefox from scratch. And make sure your anti-virus is turned off for the reload.
While I like Firefox, I had to pretty much quit using it.
It seems to suffer from memory leaks, or something.
It slows to a crawl after being on a long time.
I removed most plugins and that seems to help.
The problems got worse with every upgrade.
I am now trying Google Chrome. It seems nice.
&es, was running McCaffe, but problems solved now. At least it is, until I discover that i need one of the Add-ins that causes to problem to re-occur.
Here’s a thought to consider, I *did* notice that when I was using Task Manager to shut FF down when it froze up, that FF had literally grabbed close to a quarter of my RAM. So, perhaps it’s not FF that is hogging your memory, but one of the add-ins...Geez! Sound like a convert, don’t I? 8o)
I've also had to regress to an earlier FF version, which works fine -- my laptop's getting old.
While I love firefox, I’ve switched to Chrome for a while. I especially like it on my Acer Aspire with the smaller processor and memory.
Chrome is having occasional problems, but it only requires a browser restart. It’s so much faster, it’s worth the hassle. I had to wait until XMarks worked with it though. I must have Xmarks and an adblocker.
If I was to move away from IE, to say FF, would I lose Media Player? I have many WMA files that I play often. Does FF or others play WMA? My machine is old and short on memory, but I get by.
My wife leaves her pc on 24/7 and U have to restart Firefox every morning. I use Opera and it never freezes up on me but it also doesn’t run some web pages so I have to run them in IE. I personally don’t like FF and won’t run it.
Ok, I’m having the same problem. However, I’m not as computer-worldly as many of you are and as such, I have no idea what you mean by “add-ins.” Could somebody explain this to me and let me know how I can get rid of them? I’m using Windows XP, by the way.
No, not at all. Firefox can accomodate WMP as it’s default player. In fact it is and has been my default Media player almost since I first loaded Firefox onto my system. Got all my WMP functionality, and iTu nres as well. Got all my WinAmp functionality and files at a couple of clicks access as well. Having one browswer does not mean it wil cause you to lose the fubctionality of other programs. That was what surprised me abour Apples default player, was there was not an easy way to make a different player the default player...Though I’m pretty sure that with a little wrangling of the Windows set-up, even that would be possible.
Btrowswers are not an “either /or” choice. I’ve had at least 3 different browswers on my system at one time.
Not to gloat but that was my suggestion!
Hmm...If you don’t know what add ons are, I’m inclined to think you haven’t added any. but in case someone else uses your PC and *has*:
Look on your menu bar, and you will see a button labeled ‘Tools’ click on it, to get it’s drop down menu,, and I believe that it will be the third one down, that is labeled ‘Add-Ons. Click that, and you will get a pop up dialog box that lists the Add Ons that are installed, and give you options to either disable or remove each one.

I use Chrome, it is Lean and Mean... Too bad its a Google product..
Windows 7 is the ultimate, and Vista ran great with IE. All OS problems come when one downloads non compatible browsers, etc, and especially run poorly when they are “upgraded”. Mainly because of all the baggage and garbage they squeeze on under cover, from all the side companies they are in bed with.
I simply dump all parasite add-ons when I upgrade. They are purely annoying and unwanted and a good way to mess up your system.

If it does what you want it to do, the way you like it to do it...Much of these preferences are about what one gets used to..IMO.
But, I’ve grown accustomed to Firefoxes’ interface...as it were. ...I know where everything is, and don’t have to think about it to do most any task I want to do.
