WHY does Firefox hang?
My computer! | 1/17/10 | EinNYC

Posted on 01/17/2010 6:55:54 PM PST by EinNYC

I am very frustrated with having to wait and wait and wait for each and every webpage I want to look at to load. Firefox (the latest version, whatever that is) hangs and hangs and hangs, with the progress bar oh-so-slowly filling, then you get the blue message box of death "Firefox can't find the server" and similar messages. If you keep clicking on the "try again" button, you usually get to where you want to go eventually, but it's like a salmon swim upstream. I should add that I have Kaspersky Internet Security running to protect my 'puter.

This hanging seems to be worse on certain webpages, like the NY Daily News or Earthlink, and is worse at some times of the day (although in the middle of the night, it can still happen).

Does any FReeper out there have a clue as to why this annoying thing is happening? Sure do appreciate a fix, if it's possible.

I use Ask.com for my search engine, or Profusion as well. I get the best results from them.

Two questions:

Will Chrome import Firefox bookmarks?

Is there a Linux version?

The fix is easy, go back to explorer 8.0.

Cool. I’m on a wintel machine at the moment. The download site only shows wintel options. I assume it’s doing some kind of autodetect on the OS.

After I upgraded to Snow Leopard and Safari 4 I started having hangup problems with Safari. I'm using Chrome now and like it, although I also have Firefox.

One thing I was surprised I liked is that in Chrome you do your search in the url bar and oddly enough, Google lets you use an engine besides Google, which Safari doesn't do. It's definitely faster and has a smaller footprint than any of the other browsers.

Hey, Ray!

I use Earthlink cable as my service provide. I have no idea what your second question is about! I do have a router that I bought myself connected to my cable modem, as an extra level of protection. I also have SpyBot and run it about once a week, Better Privacy, and run a Kaspersky scan also about once a week. So far, the SpyBot hasn’t found any invader nor has Kaspersky.

It autodetects your platform, but here’s the link to download linux.

Personal Computer optimizer, it runs tests on loading speeds, downloading speeds and hundreds of other functions.
I’ve had good luck with one.

Kaspersky may be the cause. Try a different program for a while.

I find when everything freezes, it's usually a security program that causes it when it's updating.

A fresh reinstall of the program may help also.

I’m using EarthLink’s own DNS servers (configured on my router) and don’t have speed issues. Must be the connection in my area, which seems to be working okay.

I found out about the Skype thing the hard way. Removed it, and it runs better.

However, yes, this version of FF seems to hang. They fixed the memory holes, but seem to have created a CPU Util monster.

Firefox 3.6 RC2 is now available and it has largely resolved those annoying seconds of wait while going to new sites.

I have to ask this: are your computers connected to a router, and the router provides the "boot" information to get into your Internet connection? I use an EarthLink-provided Cisco/LinkSys WRT54G2 V1.5 router pre-configured for EarthLink and once I let my two machines connected to the router (mine running Windows Vista Home Premium SP3 and my stepdad's running Windows 7 Home Premium) automatically detect the IP and DNS address, I never have any problems switching between web sites.

I had good luck with PC Pitstop Optimize 3.0 from the PC Pitstop website. Please stay away from Finally Fast from the AD on TV, it is useless and should be sued out of existance.
Also, the CCleaner free download can be found on MajorGeeks.com. I use version 2.27.1070 currently, but it’s updating often. Run it just before you shut down every day.

Whoops! It should say for my machine I’m running Windows Vista Home Premium SP2.

Does this happen in IE or other browsers? I had that problem regularly, and did a registry tweak, but yet the problem seems to have been with my Internet connection or the DNS Client. Make sure that is turned on. Go to Start>Run, type services.msc and hit OK. R. click on DNS Client, choose Properties and choose Startup type as Automatic and hit OK. Then hit Start below that, and try browsing.

If that fails to help try the advice on a new profile.

But Firefox with the TabMixPlus ext. is far far better than Chrome for power users. The latter has no way to make multiple rows of tabs, r charge their size, or make them different colors, etc.

Please check out IXQuick.com. You can set it for HTTPS for all searches, and it does not record or pass on your IP to the search engines it hits against.

Also, even the picture search can be made secure.
