I agree with you on that point, and the one reason that I do not like having to use their Chrome.
I understand that Google, including their Email and search,
records everything you do.
This was from a privacy expert that was on Kook to Kook AM, a few weeks ago.
She recommends using “Startpage” for a search engine.

I use Ask.com for my search engine, or Profusion as well. I get the best results from them.

Please check out IXQuick.com. You can set it for HTTPS for all searches, and it does not record or pass on your IP to the search engines it hits against.

Also, even the picture search can be made secure.
