(On March 27, cities around the world will turn out their lights for 60 minutes.)
Environmentalists: Prepare to turn out your lights. Plans for Earth Hour 2010 are officially underway and the 60 minutes are expected to be darker than ever!
World Wildlife Funds Earth Hour is a now a 3-year-old annual event when everyone is encouraged to turn off their lights for an hour saving some electric energy in the short term while hopefully encouraging all to ponder and act on environmental issues in the long term. In 2010, Earth Hour will be happening from 8:30 p.m.9:30 p.m. on Saturday, March 27 and according to the press release, is expected to be the largest call for action on climate change in history.
Thats because lights will be going out at iconic places around the world, from the Empire State Building to the Golden Gate Bridge to Mount Rushmore to big hotels on the Vegas Strip. Like last year, many cities and even entire states are expected to take part in the event as Earth Hour partners and plan fun events for the hour of darkness. In Los Angeles last year, for example, we had a big event at L.A. Live featuring the mayor, a live D.J., and other performers. Many restaurants offered special candlelit Earth Hour deals, and comedy theaters featured half-lit performances.
You can find out if your state, city, town, business or organization has signed up to join Earth Hour by visiting the website and clicking on your state then use Earth Hours toolkit to get all those groups involved. Of course, many individuals plan their own electricity-free activities, whether its a candlelight enviro-rally with friends or a solitary nap.
Mark March 27 on your calendar and start planning now!
I guarantee my lights will be ON, my TV running and I’ll probably start my oven, washer, dish washer and microwave just for the hell of it. If leftist limp-wrists feel good about sitting in the dark let them. It’s standard fare for these people anyway.
What’s gonna happen if they’re charging a Prius at that hour?
Hey Di! My swamp is freezing, so...
I probably WON’T be turning off any electrical apps. Need all the heat I can scrounge!
I turn off my lights for about eight hours every day.....
This is equivalent to lighting a candle for someone after they die. Looks good, feels good and does ABSOLUTELY NOTHING!
I’m planning to build a flashing neon lawn sculpture of Al Gore.
Im planning to build a flashing neon lawn sculpture of Al Gore.
(1) You should switch to incandescent bulbs for your sculpture. We wouldn’t want too much “efficiency”.
(2) I greatly appreciate the placement of the word “flashing” in that sentence ... we certainly wouldn’t want a neon sculpture of a flashing Al Gore.

I always joke that I am about 10 miles past the boonies! I can relate to the pitch black and the star gazing is just the best. I really could not tell if my neighbors were shutting off lights... most people here are in bed by then anyway.
My grandchildren live with me and I try to teach them to turn off lights they are not using, etc. but not to save the earth but to save my purse!
I don’t care what y’all do, this is one I’ll just sit out and maintain the status quo.
I’ll do my part to minimize the sudden load shift for my local electrical utility, so that they don’t end up with fluctuations in our local grid, thus causing them to overgenerate and waste fuel. Steady-state generation is far more efficient than having a sudden drop in demand followed by a sudden spike an hour later. In fact, I’ll have to add extra load to cover the dropped load from other houses in the area, so I’ll have all my appliances going, all lights on etc. I may need to run a bottle of fuel cleaner through my truck at that particular time too, so I’ll let it idle while I vacuum it out with my shopvac.
Tonight we’re going to party like it’s 1499!
Note to self: Remember to order 1000 watt bulbs for March 17.
Lights will be burning bright during that hour. In fact I’ll encourage my friends and family to do the same.
We already know that the Enviro-Nazis dream for our future is a resumption of the Dark Ages. This is merely a practical demonstration.
LOL!
Like looting and mayhem?

March 27th is a Saturday. In this neck of the woods the local power company is using smart metering so you get charged one of 3 rates high mid or low depending on what time the electricity is used. Weekends are always at the low rate. The monetary savings would be minimal. If you can shift certain electric usage like laundry from high to low they encourage you to do so. Earth hour is moronic.
“Please correct me if I am wrong, but turning off the lights won't save electricity, just the person's electric bill. The electricity will still be produced, just not used. Electricity isn't stored and doesn't hang around waiting for someone to turn on a light.Incorrect, to a degree.
If I'm not mistaken, the electricity you use is produced more or less when you use it, based more on anticipated demand than on actual, so not all produced electricity does work. Use it or lose it.”
Nice site, than you; I was not familiar with it. I envy your clear skies. I’m fairly close to a major city and only five miles from a medium sized town, so clear skies are a rare pleasure.
