China: Gosh! My 8-year-old daughter is making money at school???

Gosh! My 8-year-old daughter is making money at school???

Noon today, when my daughter came home from school her mouth was red and swollen. When I asked, she said it was from eating ma la tang[a Chinese type of spicy soup]. This led me to discovering 8 yuan in her pocket, and I asked her where the money came from. She refused to say, so I went to school in the afternoon to investigate. To my astonishment, she’s making money from her classmates! How was she doing it??? Well, many of her classmates bring comics to school and are afraid of teachers’ inspections, so she keeps the comics for them, 5 jiao each time. Also, other students pay to use her pencil sharpener. The first two times are free, she charges 5 jiao from the third time and 5 jiao extra from the 6th time. In addition, I found a little notebook under her pillow tonight, with a list of people that owe her money written inside. Faint…

Had a talk with her tonight, told her that her responsibility right now is to study, and that friendship between classmates is priceless. Most importantly, it’s wrong to help others break school rules for money, because when she becomes a part of society she might break the law for money. (It’s the same thing, a set of rules that must be obeyed). The consequence to breaking the law is to lose life’s most precious freedom.

The child is asleep, but I can’t fall asleep (because in life I always like to help friends. But my daughter…), so here I am on the discussion forum, hoping to hear everyone’s thoughts. Thanks.

Well, the girl certainly has the entrepreneural spirit!

She just needs to redirect it to more socially acceptable endeavors.

She has discovered a “black market” in her school and is taking advantage. While this may make money for her, it will alienate her friends.

Over here we can pay people money to hide sensitive information or back up sensitive information from our hard drives on line in case of computer failure. If properly schooled, this little girl might have a great future in that sort of work.

A budding entrepreneur, but the father told her the right thing.

I'll have to check out that website.

It’s interesting that the mother has not thought to question where her daughter’s classmates are getting the money to pay her. Nor is she considering where her daughter is spending her money.

The economy prospers by “loose change” being shuffled around. Her daughter has just figured out where the flow of money is located and has set herself up as a participant in several transaction points.

I believe there was an episode of “Terry and the Pirates” where the Dragon Lady reminisced of getting her start in organized crime just this way. Today the pencil sharpener, tomorrow the Orient.

I wonder if the little girl has enforcers yet.

That is what I wondered, too. She had better coopt a classroom bully by giving him extended free service.:-)

I understand, but that wasn’t really my question.

It seems to this poster that a (lot) of otherwise patriotic sensible FReepers who really should be paying attention to what is happening in the world, have not one small clue about how important China is to the future of America. Nor of the nature of China. It is a race-based dictatorship. Like a really, really big Nazi Germany with nukes - except without the concentration camps.

Most seem to believe Chinese are backward peasants. I see stupid “ching chang chong” sorts of replys to things which really should be discussed seriously.

China is going to kick our butts, if present trends continue.

The really weird thing is even combat veterans who may even have faced down Soviet forces over the years - see nothing wrong with that.

It’s mind boggling.

It is not time to worry until you find the other list which says:

"Xin Lee - has not paid in a month, send Ya Su to break his fingers."

Yes, the West is slow to learn the true nature of China.

If I was to look at this as a parenting concern, I would look for a more positive way to channel her talent. Perhaps opening a flea market booth, or something similar, with her parent teaching her by observation of all the odd characters selling at a flea market the difference between honest business and what is unethical. If a person has a knack for free enterprise it should not be discouraged, but what she was doing was a reflection more of gaming the system like the corruption found in politics then honest business.

I used to buy and sell comic books at that age. I made a little money but got to read as many free comics as I liked. I even bought and sold toys and had my own table at flee markets with my dad. (My dad likes to flee market as a form of therapy LOL)

As it turns out, I'm in sales and make a darn good living. I still love comic books and all the other geeky stuff as a kid. I say let the girl do her thing. She's the embodiment of capitalism and she is hooked on the thrill of the close. :)

I say let the girl do her thing.

Plus she is learning as much or more with her wheeling and dealing than she is in the rest of school.

Absolutely, she’s learning on her own, what an MBA cannot teach. How to find or create a need, and then cater to that need.....for profit. It’s the doggone American Way!! :)

Even if I beleived this and thought it was worth posting, I don’t get what the red mouth and the soup-eating had to do with the story.
