Last night I got hit by a car and broke my knee
The Daily Caller ^ | February 4, 2010 | Jim Treacher

Last night I got hit by a car and broke my knee.

Sometime between 7 and 7:30, not long after I got home from work, I walked to the CVS on 22nd and M to get some bread, milk, and a SmartTrip card. I was right across the street from the CVS, and I waited for the crosswalk light to tell me to go before I crossed. I had plenty of time left, according to the countdown clock.

I was more than halfway there when a black SUV made an illegal left turn and hit me head-on. I absolutely had the right of way. I yelled something like, “Are you really doing this?” as it hit me before I could move.

I landed on my face on the street and smashed my glasses and scraped my hand and immediately I knew something was wrong with my left knee. I lay there screaming and cursing for I don’t know how long, and a crowd of people gathered and told me to hold still.

I was sprawled out right next to the yellow line as traffic went by. I gave one guy standing over me the number to the Daily Caller offices and he told them what happened. There’s a firehouse right across the street, so the paramedics were there in just a couple of minutes.

They took me to Georgetown Hospital, where I was soon joined by my friends and co-workers Moira Bagley, Tucker Carlson, Neil Patel, and Laura Baños. All of whom I love. Unironically. I was x-rayed and CAT-scanned and given pain medication and told that my knee was broken. I almost passed out twice from the pain.

They immobilized it, but if I tried to move it and didn’t get it exactly right, my whole leg tried to close up like a fist and I couldn’t get away from the pain. I’m typing this on Neil’s laptop on my chest on his fold-out bed in his basement and trying to move as little as possible. Now that I’ve written this out, maybe I can sleep. Sorry for the sloppiness, but I just wanted to get it out while it’s fresh in my mind.

One last thing: I’m told by multiple people that the SUV that hit me was Secret Service. If this is true, I want to know why that happened. I was crossing legally, and they just left me there. At the very least, I want an apology. What happened to me was wrong.

UPDATE 2:05pm:

The Daily Caller has been told by federal law enforcement sources that the Secret Service was not involved, and is working to confirm that driver of the vehicle which struck Jim Treacher was a State Department security employee.

UPDATE 6:44pm: Tucker and Jon are finding out more. Your tax dollars at work.

It was big and black.

No, seriously, it has been affirmed that it was a gov. car belonging to the State Dept. Mike McGuinn, the driver, is a security agent for that dept.

I bet Hillary was in the back seat yelling “Go faster, go faster. I need to get home to my vodka and my Camels!”

NYC is the worst. Someone gets run over by a car, bus, or truck every day in that city. (I watch My 9 News).

Mayor Bloomberg wants to ban all automobiles from Manhattan.
It’s usually gridlock 24/7 there. I think he’s on to something.

When I lived there (fifty years ago) traffic was reasonable. My family never owned a car. We took buses and the subway everywhere. Now it’s completely out of control. I don’t even go there anymore.

I live happily now in Bumpkinland, PA.

I bet Hillary was in the back seat ...

Or it could have been some of Nancy Pelosi's children being taken to the airport for some pleasure trip.

Bottom line: This story will be removed from public notice within a week.

Remember Biden’s limo hitting someone?? or was that Pelosi’s?

It's only the fools thinking their special that ride aournd in gawdy limos nowadays. Anyone with a brain left moves around much more discreetly in today's world.

Most of the televised garbage regarding dignitary motorcades etc is geared for the morons and spectators...They use decoys for the real insiders, and the limos are filled with props.

Not if he makes the very natural reaction to turn his shoulders away from the striking vehicle.

if it’s this CVS, there is a light right in front of it.

License #?

So many “witnesses” and no one got a license #?

I mostly agree: I think he's on something.

If you go to 22nd and M with Street View, there’s a Walgreens on the corner. The CVS at 2240 M is in the middle of the block, on the other side of M towards 23rd. There is a light in front of it, but no crosswalk, and I believe the light is for the firehouse across the street, on the corner of M and 23rd.

M and 22nd are both one way, and the description makes sense if he was crossing M, facing the traffic on 22nd to his left, going towards the CVS to his right. The illegal left turn would have been a “left turn on red” from 22nd on to M which would seem like a right turn on red because of the one way. If this is correct, the car would have come at him head on, as he described.

The only discrepancy is that the CVS is not on the corner of 22nd and M, as would be implied by his phrase, “on 22nd and M”. This would have to be amended to “on M near 22nd” to be strictly correct, but I don’t think this is too much of a stretch.

How about one day?

I don’t know why this government security worker thought he could walk away from this with no consequences.

Lon Horiuchi took off Vicki Weaver's head with no consequences (to him).

Yes—we will never forget that abuse of government power.

Here’s the latest on Jim Treacher. He had knee surgery and has 3-6 months of rehab ahead of him.

Still no word if Mike McGuinn has gotten a traffic citation yet.
