I just read an article on Huff Po (Save the Coasties) that their budget is getting cut and they will ahve to cut staff. (I could'nt post the link).
My daughter says her DH was told about this and the guys that want to re-up might not be able to.

can you imagine how bad this country will be in another couple of years. While he’;s doing smack and having concerts in the white house our enemies are getting stronger, people losing jobs etc
Now why would we need the coast guard while we are actively under threat of an attack on these shores by July?

This is wanton recklessness by the Obama administration of our national security by cutting back funding for the coast guard.
The USCG has many new duties. Since 1990 they’ve become the enforcement agency for oil spills and similar pollution in US waters. This alone is not a small job.
What oil? Oil is verboten!
Except basic areas like defense and related fields. They're cutting budgets there.
But, you know, it's not like they're sabotaging our economy and weakening our defenses, or anything ... naaaaah ... they wouldn't do that ...

The CG is also decommissioning LORAN-C due to budget cuts. The claim was that it costs $36M a year to continue operation. Granted, airborne and sea navigation has largely transitioned to GPS, but we needed to keep LORAN-C in operation while enhanced-LORAN was developed and deployed as a backup to GPS. For those who are not familiar with LORAN-C, think of it as a less accurate ground-based GPS.
I hope we don’t pay for this mistake down the road. My cynical prediction is that if we ever do turn on an e-LORAN system, it will cost more to rebuild the timing chain stations than it would have cost us to keep them operational with LORAN-C until e-LORAN showed up.

Don’t forget $50 million to buy a former cotton plantation on the island of St. Croix.
I know they do all that, but that is the least of our concerns in cutting their funding.
