Python 'eats woman's 35kg pet goat'

A Queensland woman claims a 5m-long amethyst python has devoured her pet goat.

Monica Spah, of Kuranda in the state's northeast, noticed her 35kg goat missing three weeks ago.

She then came across the snake, which had a giant lump in its back, in her backyard.

The snake disappeared after three days into neighbouring rainforest.

Nykea Ralston, who works for Kuranda's Uncle Pete's Petting Zoo, told ninemsn Ms Spah went overseas last week and instructed the zoo to take her other five goats.

"She was worried the snake would come back and eat them," Ms Ralston said.

Stuart Douglas from the Australian Venom Zoo told ninemsn it would have taken one minute for the snake to suffocate the goat and five days to completely digest it.

"They are very opportunistic reptiles and they are able to climb through trees to get their food," Mr Douglas said.

"There's a whole heap of these snakes around here ... we're now founding them in suburban streets.

"There's a reduced number of wallabies — which is what they normally feed on — so they're being forced to prey upon domesticated animals.

Mr Douglas said he had caught other pythons eating cats and dogs.

"They'll eat anything they come across," he said.

In February 2008, a Kuranda family's dog was snatched by a 5m-long python, just weeks after other snakes ate their cat and guinea pig.

Wow! A 35kg goat swallowed up by a python! No wonder he won't be hungry again for another three days.

The goats may have been safer in the back yard than they are at Uncle Pete's Petting Zoo.

“She then came across the snake, which had a giant lump in its back, in her backyard. The snake disappeared after three days into neighbouring rainforest.”

And she didn’t kill it while it was sitting there bloated?

Bang.

Down here in FL they just institued a python hunting season.

They are a non native species that have caused a lot of trouble, and they don’t die because we are tropical. So voila! hunting season.
