Harassed by the U.S. Census: A Friend Tells Her Frightening Story
DebbiesSchlussel.com ^ | 8MAR2010 | Debbie Schlussel

Last summer, my friend was selected for the 'pilot program' for the U.S. Census and tells me the frightening story of how U.S. Census workers repeatedly harassed her because she refused to fill out the ten-page questionnaire (which asked detailed, intrusive questions about her insurance, her kids' schooling, how it was paid for and how they were transported there, etc.). Because she refused to fill out the form, a census worker visited her home over ten times, trying to threaten her into filling out the form. The census worker even put a copy of 'the law' in her mailbox, with something about being prosecuted highlighted. The census worker told my friend that her participation was necessary to determine government social services, to which my friend replied that she doesn't depend on the government and that they should pry into the lives of those who take welfare checks.

My friend, a teacher, wondered how a tiny requirement in the U.S. Constitution, requiring a count of American residents, resulted in Big Brother government suddenly demanding detailed personal information about her family. My friend repeatedly told the census worker, "We have four people in our household. That's all I'm required to tell you, and that's all you need to know." Unfortunately, shortly after that, my friend and her husband were audited by the IRS over an alleged discrepancy of $150. Here's more from my friend:

I think during the last census they sent out these humongous forms for some people.

The 2010 Census claims it's only 10 questions.

From Debbie’s site a poster had this video about how to take the Census with the hilarious Christopher Walken.

And here is the stupidest reasoning for one of the questions in the current census:

Question 5: “Please provide information for each person living here. Start with a person here who owns or rents this house, apartment, or mobile home. If the owner or renter lives somewhere else, start with any adult living here. This will be Person 1. What is Person 1’s name?”

Reason claimed for this question:

“Listing the name of each person in the household helps the respondent to include all members, particularly in large households where a respondent may forget who was counted and who was not.”

They must be thinking about a house where 30 illegal aliens are hiding — I am sure they will be filling out the census form. (/sarc)

I received a notice today I will receive the census in one week. They waste taxpayers money with one piece of mail informing me about another piece of mail and the last part informing people of their website was written in five languages other than English!

I was sitting in my psychologists office today. Someone came out and said to a guy sitting by me who, I hadn't noticed, "You're the gentleman from the Census?" - blah blah blah....and after some pleasantries which indicated this was obviously official counting business, they went back to a meeting room.

I mean...WTF?

I got a visit the last time they did this. I told them the number of people in the house and shut the door. He musta filled out the rest himself.

I’ve been debating that or just filling it out with random info.

how would they know if you intentionally lied in ways not easy to notice?

Like saying you had 4 people living there and 11 toilets for instance?

Or saying you had 2 white people and 3 pacific islanders living there?

What if you consider yourself American Indian when the only blood there is from when you cut yourself shaving at the cherokee sun casino hotel bathroom?

This article NAMES a harassing Census worker. Huh. That's a heckuva good idea, and why not some accompanying photos and videos?

They could find themselves on an internet site...Census Workers to watch out for...

They can’t get to my door without scaling a 7 foot gate. I will answer only those questions I see fit to answer, and that might even be zero. Eff everything the Obama admin does.

I am considering putting down that I am a bi-racial, transexual with a felony record who is also an illegal alien. I figure I might get a cushy union job with that resume or maybe they will let me run the Treasury Department or TSA.

“The census worker even put a copy of ‘the law’ in her mailbox...”
Am I correct in suggesting that if the census worker “put” (not mailed) something in her mailbox, that the census worker could be charged for tampering with the property of the U.S. Mail? (the mailbox itself) After all, the census worker is not a postal worker.

Last time I went the other way.

I wrote 33 Hispanics and 6 African-Americans
lived in my small 3BR house with an income
of $23.50 per year.

We have 19 cars, but walk to work.

Four teens in the house were pregnant, but
all were getting abortions next week.

We are 9 years late on our rent to the white
Catholic landlord.

We live very well on the food stamp program
as 13 of us have 3 social security numbers
the others only have two (slackers).

15 are HS dropouts, but selling crack, powder,
and pot is steady work. Crackers love the
powder.

Oops, somebody just popped a cap in Sancho,
so make that 32 Hispanics.

I never heard back. Just a normal SoCal family.

The last three censuses I have answered the race question with, "human".

Cordially,

18 U.S.C. 1725

“Whoever knowingly and willfully deposits any mailable matter such as statements of accounts, circulars, sale bills, or other like matter, on which no postage has been paid, in any letter box established, approved, or accepted by the Postal Service for the receipt or delivery of mail matter on any mail route with intent to avoid payment of lawful postage thereon, shall for each such offense be fined under this title.”

Ironically, putting a copy of “the law” in the lady’s mailbox is itself a violation of federal law.

They are just using Tax dollars to try and give the Post Office a little more business.

Back in January I received this piece of advice from a friend:

2010 Census Begins Soon
Some helpful info to keep in mind....

THIS IS PRETTY BASIC ADVICE;
Be Cautious about giving info to Census Workers, by the BBB.

With the U.S. Census process beginning, the Better Business Bureau (BBB) advises people to be cooperative, but cautious, so as not to become a victim of fraud or identity theft. The first phase of the 2010 U.S. Census is under way as workers have begun verifying the addresses of households across the country. Eventually, more than 140,000 U.S. Census workers will count every person in the United States and will gather information about every person living at each address including name, age, gender, race, and other relevant data.

The big question is - how do you tell the difference between a U.S. Census worker and a con artist? The BBB offers the following advice:

If a U.S. Census worker knocks on your door, they will have a badge, a handheld device, a Census Bureau canvas bag, and a confidentiality notice. Ask to see their identification and their badge before answering their questions. However, you should never invite anyone you don’t know into your home.

Census workers are currently only knocking on doors to verify address information. Do not give your Social Security number, credit card number or banking information to anyone, even if they claim they need it for the U.S. Census.

REMEMBER, NO MATTER WHAT THEY ASK, YOU REALLY ONLY NEED TO TELL THEM HOW MANY PEOPLE LIVE AT YOUR ADDRESS.

While the Census Bureau might ask for basic financial information, such as a salary range, YOU DON’T HAVE TO ANSWER ANYTHING AT ALL ABOUT YOUR FINANCIAL SITUATION. The Census Bureau will not ask for Social Security, bank account, or credit card numbers, nor will employees solicit donations. Anyone asking for that information is NOT with the Census Bureau.

AND REMEMBER, THE CENSUS BUREAU HAS DECIDED NOT TO WORK WITH ACORN ON GATHERING THIS INFORMATION.. No Acorn worker should approach you saying he/she is with the Census Bureau.

Eventually, Census workers may contact you by telephone, mail, or in person at home. However, the Census Bureau will NOT contact you by E-mail, so be on the lookout for Email scams impersonating the Census.

Never click on a link or open any attachments in an E-mail that are supposedly from the U.S.Census Bureau.

For more advice on avoiding identity theft and fraud, visit www.bbb.org

PLEASE SHARE THIS INFO WITH FAMILY AND FRIENDS.

There won't be any census form filed by *this* household and nobody in it will be talking to any census workers...regardless of how persistent or threatening they are.

We WANT this state to lose as many Congressional districts as possible.
