The Nixon-was-set-up claim has been out there for some time. One version has the CIA knowing of the plumbers through team member James McCord and then making sure that the plumbers were caught at the Watergate to avoid damage to ongoing CIA intelligence operations.

After Nixon directly threatened the CIA, McCord wrote his famous letter to Judge Sirica stating that there had been perjury and a cover up in the trials of the Watergate burglars. From then on, Nixon was doomed.

Another version -- which is compatible with the first -- has John Dean ordering the Watergate break in to get information about a prostitute booking service run out of the DNC. Supposedly, Dean's then wife had previously worked for the prostitution ring.

In support of Nixon's innocence as to ordering the Watergate break in is that the available tapes and recollections of witnesses indicate that he was genuinely baffled as to who did the break in and why. Nixon and his senior staff learned soon enough that their people were involved and the cover up was on.

Interesting theory...the show is a little kooky and over the top with the “X-files” stuff for my taste. But once in a while it makes interesting points...like the show on Global Warming. I would like to see Jesse run when the Senate seat is up for grabs again...and kick Stuart Smalley’s rear.....

If you read the Watergate transcripts its hard to figure out what exactly he was guilty of. There are lots of rumors that Dean’s wife was a hooker and they were breaking into the DNC HQ to protect Dean. There really wasn’t any proof of anything.
