The man who fell four floors to his death in the Mall of America Wednesday was a 21-year-old from New York state scheduled to face a rape charge that day.

Dakota Rey Kohler-Lander, of Schenectady, fell Wednesday at the Mall of America after security officers were called about 6:50 p.m. about a man with a knife, police said. Seconds after officers approached him, he climbed over the railing near the Cantina No. 1 restaurant and fell to the first floor.

The medical examiner's office said he died of multiple blunt-force injuries. The office said a ruling on his manner of death has yet to be made.

Bloomington police Cmdr. Mark Stehlik said Thursday that investigators have ideas about what led to Kohler-Lander's death but they won't be made public until the investigation is complete. That will include background checks, interviews and a meeting with the medical examiner, Stehlik said.

The MOA is an illegally posted gun-free-zone.

Thank goodness that this creep decided to run from the Paul Blarts at the MOA....

With a knife, he would been asked to leave.

With a pistol and a permit....he would have been banned for life....

Ilove it when the debris of society save us money...

If he was guilty, this is a good result. If he was innocent, whoever falsely accused him should be charged with murder.

It wasn’t the fall that got him, it was the sudden stop at the bottom!

Exactly!

Years ago there was some mini-scandal with a local R pol and some staffer .. I told the local GOP chairman, that’s what an R gets for hiring a woman with a hyphenated name ;)

Then, the hippie/yuppie parents, who’ve probably never been W of the Hudson, had to name him Dakota.

I would like to thank this man for his service to the taxpayers and going ahead with punishing himself more severely than if he had been tried and convicted.

The kid was doomed from the beginning with a name like that.

I named my first son Dakota Alan (Dakota after the state and the middle name after Alan Jackson).

According to local reports, Kohler-Lander's twin 17-year-old brothers, Alexander and Zachary Rohloff, were killed last June while riding separate ATVs when they hit head-on near the top of a small hill. In light of Kohler-Lander's death, a spokeswoman for the Albany County District Attorney made it clear he was innocent of the New York rape charge until proven guilty.

A sad situation all around. Prayers for everyone involved with this sordid tale.

Although it was consensual sex, because of their ages, he was twenty one and she was sixteen, under the law that is rape. Actually, I thought that rape only applied in a case like this if the minor was under sixteen, but obviously I was wrong. I suppose the parents of the girl must have brought charges.

The previous loss his brothers make an already terrible situation even worse for his parents. I feel very sad for all involved on both sides.

From the article-

"Kohler-Lander was arrested last October and charged with one count of rape in the third degree for allegedly having consensual sex with a 16-year-old girl, said Heather Orth, communications director for the Albany County District Attorney."
