Daddy used to empty out his shotgun shells...
Vanity | olepap

Y'all

The drive by truckers had a song (never gonna change) that went...

Daddy used to empty out his shotgun shells,
Fill 'em fulla black eyed peas.
Aim real low at your feet and your ankles,
And rip right through your knees

Does anybody have any first hand experience with loading shotgun shells with black eyed peas?
How about loading shotgun shells with rock salt? What kind of rock salt do you use? What is the effective radius of a rock salt load?

Anybody ever used black eyed peas, pinto beans, anything like that for a .12 ga load? I think if the bean hull got into the skin they would make a mess that would be hard to heal.

I usually keep my 12 gauge loaded with 7 1/2 bird shot, because I shoot skeet and I believe it is a good self defense load. Double ought slugs will rip right through drywall, plywood, and plaster, possibly killing the inoocent beagle next door. I think I can hose down a miscreant with bird shot and keep him under control.

Anyhow, I am interested in what y'all have to say about this arcane topic.

Thanks

Very short range, low impact (relatively speaking).

00 for me.

I have heard of loading a 12 gauge with a stack of dimes.Nasty short range self defence load.

Myth Busters did a show on that one. Dimes are totally useless, just a waste of good dimes and will probably ruin the barrel of your shotgun.

I’ve seen #4 buckshot recommended instead of 00 for home defense, it’s supposed to limit overpenetration while still being effective. Birdshot won’t have enough penetration against a heavily dressed or fat/muscular adversary, except at very close range.

When I was a young lad in Florida, one of the neighbors took umbrage with we innocent young teenagers filling bags with tangerines from his grove.... Rock salt.... we learned our lesson.... stang a lot.. not much penetration

I keep a 20 round drum loaded with 12 Gauge 00-Buck.

When shot, I don’t want it to move(or anything else) anymore.

I grew up around firearms. When bored on my Uncle’s farm I would dump the shot out of the shell and fill it with whatever was around and test it out against plywood or birds. You name it, I loaded it.

He also had an old damascus twist steel barreled shotgun but I wasn’t stupid enough to put a modern shotgun shell in that 12 gauge and fire it.

My cousin once took one of my uncles shotguns, stuck it in a pile of fresh pig manure and pulled the trigger. He survived the barrel exploding............

Load your muzzle loader with choice of odd pelletage most of these old ditties refer to the days of yore when muzzle loaders were state of the art. The rock salt was to run kids off that they really did not want to hurt just teach a lesson to. I suppose if you were good at reloading you could try some odd loads with modern cartridges but some of them do not recommend reloading at all any more, reloading is not for the neophyte.

I had a coworker who had been shot with rocksalt in his youth. Was ditbiking on a farmer’s fields without permission, ... anyway, the scars are really hideous.

Depending on the jurisdiction there is no difference between shooting buckshot, birdshot or rocksalt, still going to get arrested for intent to commit manslaughter at a minimum if the LEOs and DA sees it that way.

The more expensive beanbags that have been classified as “less lethal” by the BATFE classification system would probably provide legal protections for the intent you are looking for by posting this question on FR...

JMHO, I am not a lawyer, and didn’t stay at a Holiday Inn last night.

I fill my shotgun shells with precious diamonds.

The robber will spend his last breath picking out and putting the diamonds in his pocket.

Y'see.
