Daddy used to empty out his shotgun shells...
Vanity | olepap

Y'all

The drive by truckers had a song (never gonna change) that went...

Daddy used to empty out his shotgun shells,
Fill 'em fulla black eyed peas.
Aim real low at your feet and your ankles,
And rip right through your knees

Does anybody have any first hand experience with loading shotgun shells with black eyed peas?
How about loading shotgun shells with rock salt? What kind of rock salt do you use? What is the effective radius of a rock salt load?

Anybody ever used black eyed peas, pinto beans, anything like that for a .12 ga load? I think if the bean hull got into the skin they would make a mess that would be hard to heal.

I usually keep my 12 gauge loaded with 7 1/2 bird shot, because I shoot skeet and I believe it is a good self defense load. Double ought slugs will rip right through drywall, plywood, and plaster, possibly killing the inoocent beagle next door. I think I can hose down a miscreant with bird shot and keep him under control.

Anyhow, I am interested in what y'all have to say about this arcane topic.

Thanks

I would think that filling your shot shells with anything organic would really foul up your barrell.........Personally, I wouldn’t even think of it.

Rice, gets under the skin and swells up.

Old timers used to use dried bacon rind and rock salt.

Myself I would like something that spreads a stain under the skin, turns a person a different color.

I use 1 shot in the first shell (2,000 bb’s) and 7.62 shot in the 2nd shell (22 bb’s). If the 1st round doesn’t disperse whoever is pissing me off, the 2nd shell will shirley do the job.

Wow...A DBT and a rock salt reference in the same post. Good job. Love me some DBT.

I ain’t here to save no souls and even if I could
I could never save enough to put back half the ones I took
So if they rest in torment you can’t say it’s cause of me
They’d long been bought and paid for like that fool’s in Tennessee

I wonder what thick glass shards would do? Or tiny pieces of razor blades?

I’ve got an old cut off Savage 520 that I use to test funky stuff. Best one was big split shot crimped down on wire fishing leader and coiled up in the wad cup. It would spin through the air like a turbo charged bolo. Not very accurate but scary. Also tried it with very small bathtub chain, it didn’t have the same “garrote” power of the wire.

I know some reloaders that add a dried bean to get the proper volume when using 7/8th ounce of shot in a 1 ounce recipe.

There is another way, say...Your out stealing a watermelon, a man comes out of his house cussing toward your location. You see fire and hear a cannon go off and something hit’s you..You don’t find out nor care what hit you until you have stop running and caught you breath...way off.. about a mile..
Then of course you don’t tell when your young..Nothing hurt.. but your feelings.

Don't mess around! You could get away with a lot when the shells were loaded with black powder but modern smokeless powder is senstive to charge weight and other factors. You are likely to get a squib load and possibly plug the barrel, or if the load is too heavy you could bulge or blow out the barrel.

If you shoot someone aim to kill them, or hold your fire and die yourself!

Never pick up a gun just planning to threaten! If they aren't smart enough to raise their hands that's just too bad for them!

We did that once. Had some old rounds that had gone through a flood...no good for anything except shooting up and experimentation. Every third or fourth one would just go “Phoomp” and the actual load would fall 10-20 feet from the end of the barrel.

But the ones that did work were nasty. Catfish sinkers, carpet tacks, glass, brad nails, etc. All were of only EXTREMELY close range effectiveness. Some were pretty devastating to the pumpkins we were shooting at, especially the catfish sinkers, but there wasn’t a single one that I would have liked to be shot with.

I fill my shotgun shells with precious diamonds.

You too? I find 18 1/4 carat works perfect! They are really hard and penetrate like a mo-fo. Little pricey, but doggonit! I'm smart and people like me so I'm worth it!

You can shoot toward me with those, as long as you barely miss! You should have an email somewhere, btw.

I am certianly not advocating anyone do this, as a live shotgun shell is dangerous and should be treated as such. However...
Rock salt, epsom salt, peas, etc all have the same problem. They don't have enough density to retain energy down range. They all will cause damage in close, but are useless at distance. That being said, any one of these loads is effective as a non-lethal method of, say, running dogs out of the trash or something similar. Effective range in my experience is roughly 35 yrds. ( by "effective", I mean stinging a dog's butt without causing any permanent damage) I would limit their use to single or double barrels where cycling the action isnt required.
If you have reached the point where pulling your weapon on a human target is required, use real ammo and aim center mass. Do not shoot to wound.

get really lethal use a cut-wad.

Cut the shell almost all the way through just behind the wad. Everything in front of it comes out as a whole. Fires almost as far as a pumpkin ball and hits explosively.

Allow me to make a correction...I should have typed 35 FEET instead of yards. Sorry for the confusion

To: MileHi
This thread is just sooooo very wrong.

THE ONLY time a firearm should be used against another human being is if “deadly force” is justified!

Bringing a firearm into a confrontation of any kind is either an acknowledgment of a deadly force situation or an escalation of a situation into a deadly force encounter. It does not matter what ammunition is contained in the firearm!

One has to understand if deadly force is justified or not, based on the local laws. Any use of a deadly force, when it is not justified is a sever crime. Anyone who has a firearm that they intend to use for self defense needs to understand the above based on the laws of where they live and intend to protect themselves with a firearm.

If deadly force is required, one wants appropriately chosen ammunition that will KILL! Anything else is just plane stupid. In simple language if you are in a life an death situation, then you “shoot to live.” You kill the other person because you had not choice or alternative action to avoid such a situation except to die or be badly injured.

If deadly force is not required, then a firearm in not needed and should not be displayed in any kind of a threatening manner. (If a fire arm is displayed in a non deadly force situation in some places that may called brandishing a weapon and may (or may not) be a crime. ) Even in open carry states, one needs to be careful to stay legal. Many police that oppose open carry have tried to use the brandishing/intimidation argument to prevent open carry with a variety of success.

Therefore, in the logic of our legal system, loading any type of special ammunition such as rock salt, black-eyed peas, rice, or rubber bullets is only likely to get one arrested for using deadly force, when it is OBVIOUSLY not warranted. Consider this a potential catch-22, unless you have a sympathetic investigating police officer or DA.

Rather than trying to figure out “less lethal loads”, people would be better served to learn the specific firearm laws of their jurisdiction.

Shooting for the purpose of revenge is also not usually justified by the courts. Shooting for the purpose of preserving life or preventing grave bodily indjury is often (but not always) justified by juries.
